Seriously? Seriously. Seriously!? I’m beginning to see where Sarah Drew’s and Jessica Capshaw’s paychecks went, what with all this extended Debbie Allen on-screen time, plus the continual return of Greg Germann, Kim Raver and the brief hello-goodbye return of Jeff Perry.
Must admit I’m really, really pleased that despite the preset focus of this week’s episode that we didn’t get sucked totally into a Catherine Fox surgery vortex. We’ve had non-sequitur, one-off type episodes like this before, I mean honestly – what recurring Doctor (and even some non-recurring Doctors) has not spent a major incident on that OR table? If I made the list to prove my point I could basically just copy & paste the principal cast list for each season. But they handled this episode really well by interspersing it with Mer-Dad drama. Smart move to know that neither story line could possibly hold a whole episode on its own!
Surprisingly touched at how Thatcher really came around. Like so many things that Meredith was sure she knew but actually didn’t – you know like her mom being pregnant with Maggie when she was five? It was really endearing to hear how he came to Derek’s funeral and chose not to try and speak with her because he thought it would read more like he was doing it for himself than for her. That was some really beautiful closure. And it felt right. Meredith softened, she learned, and I love that she shared the presents with the kids at the end. But why is Ellis the same size as Bailey??? Isn’t she like 2 or 3 years younger than him!? What is going on with these Grey-Shepherd children???
Jesse Williams deserves the Emmy for that ‘scared little kid’ ugly cry moment in the hallway with Maggie. And I love that we did not belabor the point of Maggie being able to relate because her mom just died a few seasons back. Everyone really got their little moments here. (Would have been nice to see Alex … even if he was just sitting in the living room with Meredith at the end, since this was basically a reconciliation episode for the four that are left … Bailey was there to help Webber … Alex should have been there to help Mer.)
This Altman-Koracick thing is growing on me. Koracick is growing on me. Sort of like mold that you really ought to get rid of but then realize might be the harmless edible kind. I guess he can stay. Or we’ll see if he stays. It would certainly put a pin into that OMelleddy nonsense for a hot second. Sorta glad we had no Owen this week. Because THAT would have just complicated things for Amelia. And she had her ’emotional word vomit’ with ‘super hero poses’ so that worked out okay.
Man oh man oh man if Bohkee could talk! She’s my favorite non-primary. She’s everybody’s favorite non-primary. Dancing all around that OR before the start of surgery? What will they think of next. And her face says it all! Please oh please oh please never let Bohkee end up on the other side of that table like Isaac and Nurse Pancake did.
Wasn’t much else happening this week. Catherine gets to live with cancer and a big old scar across the side of her neck. And she’s right. people live with cancer all the time. Izzie did (and probably still is.) And she’ll do exactly what she said – operate in-between and all that nonsense. Nothing lost, nothing to fret over. She’ll live out the series if it really does end with season 16.
Guess we’ll see what’s in store next week. Keep the faith, Grey-Sloaners.
