WHOA WHOA WOW. Two months – it took two months for Niko & Glasses to get their shirts off!? That is one hell of a first-time-out-the-gate courtship. But you’ve gotta love how Alex handled that. I mean – if you’re going to cruise into the hospital during a super windstorm at the tail end of it – you might as well duck into the ambulance in the ambulance bay … and bust two new doctors who’ve just finished getting it on. LOVE LOVE how he handled that though. ‘That can’t happen again. On-call rooms, supply closets, that weird little radiology room on 4 – doors that have locks! Think!’ And it was super cute that Niko still took Schmidt’s hand at the end of all that. Go team Schmiko!
It’s been so long since the last episode I forgot we had 3 different sets of people trapped in the physical elevators, plus people metaphorically trapped in elevators … like Maggie not knowing what to do about Jackson and Webber being all strung up and out about what’s going on with his wife and taking it out on poor Maintenance Man – who I so badly want to call Crunch – and that was before the elevator incident! Webber is coming apart at the seams and getting the news about Katherine isn’t going to make it any better. Plus he still probably has to disclose to her about his night in the pokey after smashing up that bar …
Nice to see all the interns back in action – with some getting waaaaay more action than others – this episode. But did Parker get blown away in the storm? Seriously – did we lose Parker and no one mentioned it? Also – LOVE LOVE LOVE that cheeky ‘He got blown in the ambulance bay’ line from Schmidt. TOO. PRICELESS. Even Qadri got screen time running around trying to figure out which elevator was trapping Bailey & Helm & Cici’s organs … but WHERE IS PARKER!?!?
Back to the recycled plot-lines of Grey’s. We’ve got love-triangles galore going on – let’s start with Major Owen Hunt and his war-wife and his ex-wife. Anyone else remember that night Meredith first brought Zola home without Derek and it was super quiet? And now we have Owen bringing Leo home and it’s super quiet (and he even said exactly that?). The trauma in the elevator with Hunt, Shepherd, and Altman … lots of panic and cheek flying off of Amelia – but can you blame her? And she’s super noble giving him time to consider his options. But that whole ‘this is how we – Teddy & Owen – fit together and work together like a flawless trauma machine’ moment really puts Amelia on the outside of the ties that bind … so I see her heading for an implosion in the near-distant future. And of course there’s the baby. So who does Owen choose?
This is a dilemma for ANY Grey’s fan. We’ve all been pulling so long for Amelia and Owen to get their stuff together … though time after time it has proven disastrous. Owen has always wanted a baby – we saw that with Cristina. And when Teddy was around – we were all pulling for him and Teddy – even though Cristina was right there (remember that time she tried to trade him like a baseball card to Teddy for better surgeries and teachings?). And now Teddy, with whom he shared a war, is back with his 16-week old baby in utero … of all the times to not have Arizona Robins employed at Grey-Sloan … ah well.
Decisions … decisions … personally I think Amelia and Teddy could all move to Meredith’s with Maggie and be the four-lost sister wives of Grey-Sloan. Without husbands. And raise the four kids with four responsible doctor adults. Owen is clearly never going to learn to keep it in his pants … so why should he get either of them?
Everyone knew Meredith spoke Italian, except Deluca. She slept her way through Europe with Di, remember? And apparently also took it in undergrad. Very, very, very touching moment when DeLuca really opened up about his father and his past – and that is a really powerful concept – that his father was this man who was mentally ill and did horrible things that he got away with but he was also the guy who taught him to play soccer and to name the stars, etc. That happens in real life and often times our heroes are our villains all in one story.
But the Mer-DeLuca-what’s his name? New Ortho God? Clearly he’s had such a lasting impact on me that after just two months I can’t remember his name. Link. Atticus Lincoln. Not gonna lie – had to look that up. This is like Derek-Finn all over again. Except everyone’s pulling for DeLuca because he’s a known quantity – just like we all pulled for Derek. Poor new guy doesn’t stand a chance. LOVE how Jackson pegged him down in the OR telling him to let his fellow do it if he wasn’t going to. Link’s got some learning to do! And probably some settling down to the side … of course if he doesn’t hook up with Mer, we’ve got to find someone for him to hook up with …? Maybe Maggie when this Jaggie thing falls to pieces.
Third elevator! Third elevator! Helm flipping out with her panic attack in the elevator was something else. It’s really shedding all sorts of light on what Bailey is going through. Bailey’s OCD is manifesting into another anxiety disorder and it’s really harrowing to watch.
I think the moment that really hit me harder than expected in this episode – wasn’t losing Cici (PS, she dies) after all of that, or Amelia basically telling Owen that she wants him to think over his options, which include Teddy, or even Teddy falling apart after they only hug post-surgery in the scrub room – but it was Bailey falling apart on Alex in her office.
Suddenly I was crying and said exactly what Bailey said in that episode where Gary Clark shot up the hospital – ‘Where is all this water coming from?’ And I realized – like she did as Charles was lying there dying – that I was crying. THAT was the kicker. Bailey is a strong and powerful female archetype, a potent and impressive woman of color in charge of the entire hospital and the stress is taking its toll – and watching her fall apart was that unexpected ugly cry that Grey’s is oh-so good at.
Also Jo stayed home drunk. Smart move, wife-of-the-interim-chief. Betty’s going to rehab, Jackson & Maggie have to break the news to Richard about Katherine, though at least he’ll quit thinking she’s having an affair with Koracick. And would somebody please find Parker? Guess we’ll have to see what next week has in store for the Doctors … dates with DeLuca AND Link for Meredith? (Obvi not at the same time.) Katherine being told off for trying to keep her tumor a secret? I predict a great verbal tussle breaking out between Webber & Katherine over who’s keeping secrets about what from whom, and poor Mer getting sucked into the middle of it since she’s keeping secrets for them both. More of Koracick? More of Niko & Schmidt? And of course more Omeileddy (Owen+Amelia+Teddy) drama. Boy oh boy what fun awaits those of us desperately clinging to the lives of Grey-Sloan’s doctors!
