Seriously? Seriously. WHO was in charge of hair and wardrobe this week??? Because Amelia’s wannabe cute bob was a hot mess. And it had such potential to be ultra cute! Ugh. And WHAT was Meredith wearing at the end!?
Poor Koracick. He’s that deeply fragile type who wears the jackass exterior as a thick protective skin … so naturally that awkward huggy-moment with Teddy and Owen (which basically looked ultra-intimate because Kim Raver has never been able to make Teddy cry – not this time around or way back in the Cristina & Henry days – without making her look like she’s giggling herself to death) put him right off. Hope he does stick around, though.
Owen actually managed to be palatable this week! Still doesn’t make up for most of the rest of his existence, but hey, at least he wasn’t a hot mess of a trainwreck. Awful parallel for Teddy having to treat that mother, though judging on looks alone Teddy’s much further along in her pregnancy. Owen DOES NOT get points for offering/insisting he handle that patient for her, even if she did break down over it at the end.
The whole DeLuca dynamic is really a derailing tangent that leads us into this universe that runs slightly parallel but in a weird and pathetic way to the actual reality of Grey-Sloan Memorial. Carina is really bland, not unlike tilapia – but more on that later – and it’s getting really boring. She was so fiery and spicy and full of zest and verve when she first came to Grey-Sloan, and granted that was escalated by Arizona, but this whole retreating into a spineless, wimpy mess that she’s become around her father just isn’t working and actually reads as a disservice to the character on the whole.
Papa DeLuca is sort of a double-edged three-pointed pitchfork. While it does draw the stigma of mental illness to the forefront of the conversation – at the very least for Bailey and Alex – it’s also creating this banal void out of Carina, and putting Andrew in a very weird place. The weird-Andrew-place actually isn’t such a bad thing because it pushes him and Mer apart and they just don’t work. Period. Papa DeLuca’s research is also a really solid representation of the CRISPR-genetically modified babies real life debacle, scientists testing things before the technology is really ready, doing questionable, morally dubious, albeit well-intended, scientific advancements, etc. Think it’s for the best that he’s packing up and disappearing. Maybe fiery Carina will reappear, though that seems unlikely without Arizona.
Jackson’s fish-skin technique is awesome. And it was a good excuse to see all the interns again! Yay interns! Love the hilarious little segue it gave Webber to hold a fish-fry. (He is absolutely right – that is such a waste of food otherwise!) And Bailey did get a really nice hat from Alex’s mom before that storyline concluded itself all nicely and neatly. Can’t say the same for Jo … who as we’ve witnessed with everyone except Maggie when it comes to estranged parents … this whole ‘find my birth mother’ thing is going to blow up in her face. And why did we have to go for the cheap joke of ‘… it says I’m mostly British?’ We get it, Camilla Luddington. It isn’t cute, just glaringly over-obvious. But good luck with that mom-hunt thing. (Kudos to Parker for pulling that one out lickity-split!)
Amelia and Link. NOPE. This just ends badly. ‘It was just sex, but was it, blah blah blah’ and as the DeLuca-Mer thing falls apart and he was really interested in her and they’ll start to attempt to make it work again – it’ll just get ugly in a hurry between Mer and Amelia. (Oooh – maybe THAT’s why 4th Shepherd Sister is coming to town!) And seriously? SERIOUSLY!? Batman & Batman!? THAT is the best you could come up with?? You couldn’t even pick good, Marvel heroes? LAME. Great that we finally got to see Link in hot-n-sexy-time action, but with Amelia? Nope. Pain and suffering is coming down that path. Also, props to the Intimacy Director for this episode because our sexy-time scenes had this inherent sensuality to them that I can’t ever recall seeing in the Grey’s universe before.
Hopefully next week’s episode will fix that messy-unkempt bob style on Amelia, find Mer some better outfits, and either bring us Megan Hunt or 4th Sheperd Sister. But hey – Teddy’s still pregnant, Koracick is still in the picture, and nobody’s mom has died. Yet. Sounds like a win-win this week on Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday at 8:00 PM on ABC.
