Grey’s Anatomy :: Momma Knows Best

ABC

I am all for Meredith Grey getting the warm and fuzzies as she dips her feet back out in the dating pool – but seriously? Seriously. And why is the whole hospital melting down over it? Hellmouth, Glasses, Amelia? Everybody is melting down over a little makeup and this blind date – which we all know is going to tank. #canwejustgobacktomcdreamyplease

Last week’s episode felt like some disjointed hiccup and this week’s episode was filler, filler, filler. And not even three weeks/four episodes into the season and we’re already on a week’s gap/pause. Why? Because we can only do 8-10 episodes before ‘Winter Finale’ or whatever.

The patient that Maggie was dealing with was probably the best part of this week’s episode — that and Owen’s mom — but more on her in a minute. That patient and her condition is what I fear most – having had a heart attack, not realizing it, going on for days on end without having realized it, and then dying because I didn’t realize it. We can’t all run to the ER every time we get indigestion or heartburn. But more and more it’s like ‘oh they just thought it was heart burn, it was a heart attack, they lived for a few more days and now they’re dead.’ Thanks for confirming my biggest fear, Shonda. Thanks.

ABC

Also really loved the dynamic of the father-son in that patient situation. It was totally that mirror-trick that Shonda does so well where she takes the problem that the doctor is having and reflects it into the patient case? That was well done and it was potent in relation to keeping things from children. Well done.

OWEN’S MOM!!! ❤ ❤ OMG. ‘I’m not here to see you. I have a life, Owen.’ THAT. WAS. PRICELESS. But seriously – how many of you thought she was there to see her boyfriend? And whatever happened to him? Did he and Matthew ride off into the sunset together with April? LOVED that she was there giving advice (and metaphors) with Amy. Sort of forget that she would have known about Amy, after all they did get married. She’s a hoot. I love her. More Owen’s mom. And are we EVER going to bring back Tyne Daly? I know that there was a big screaming match where Amelia uninvited her to the wedding … but she is still Mrs. Shepherd …

And where is Jackson? Seriously. I mean I don’t really care all that much for him – but again – we made huge budgetary cuts by way of Arizona and Kepner … so we could what – have him faffing about on a private actor’s sabbatical? (Is he off filming something else? Did something happen to him IRL? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?)

No surprises that the date with Meredith tanked. Even if it did almost ‘not tank.’ Super cute that Alex tried to make it entertaining for her; brings back memories of how they used to wager on the outcomes of surgeries. Also, isn’t it too bad that Alex and Mer can’t be a thing? I mean nobody really wants that but it seems like we’ve tried everything else … except Link. Who apparently knows Jo. Or Brooke. Because she was Brooke before and now she’s Jo. Or Jo Brooke. I can’t remember what she went with. How did he walk around the hospital for three weeks without running into her? And where is Dr. No-Name-Hot-Pants?

ABC

Alex & Webber is just like the good old days – why is anyone so surprised? Teddy married a patient to give him insurance. Webber took the blame for Meredith tampering with the Alzheimer’s trial. They all do crazy crap to help patients out because health care is BATS. (Love that line from Alex’s mom.) Bailey was Bailey; that was a great use of her resources, clearly. And is Station 19 still in that much trouble that we’ve got to crossover again and so soon? We used to only cross over with Private Practice when it was desperately flagging in the ratings department. The show hasn’t been on long enough to be desperately flagging in the ratings department!!

No preview for next week … and a weird interim preview from last week that actually had nothing to do with this week’s episode. Maybe they’ve all finally lost it. It was super cute to see little Ellis half grown-up. (Guess they use soap opera timelining with prime-time drama children too.)

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM on ABC.
