Grey’s Anatomy :: All of Me

ABC

Fourteen.

Fourteen weddings over fourteen seasons, I’m not even sure how that’s possible – and I guess technically some of them don’t count because Burke never made it down the aisle, and we never actually saw George & Callie get married (or Henry & Teddy for that matter) and some people got married twice … like Meredith & Derek (but we only really count Post-It) and April & Matthew. I mean … look at this list of weddings.

  • George + Callie
  • Burke + Cristina
  • Alex + Izzie
  • Derek + Meredith
  • Cristina + Owen
  • Henry + Teddy
  • Arizona + Callie
  • Bailey + Ben
  • Richard + Catherine
  • April + Matthew
  • April + Jackson
  • Amelia + Owen
  • Jo + Alex
  • April + Matthew

Seriously. That’s a lot of weddings. That averages out to one a season … how did we even do that? Moving on.

Get your insulin because this episode will give you diabetes. Also have an Epi-pen on standby because it’s going to give you hives … you know what? Just get all the injectables ready and have them on standby. (Was that Bokhee at the wedding? Handing April the pinwheel-straw-trach?)

Only on a medical drama could you (A) Be at the wrong wedding … but the mother of the bride still collapses and has a medical emergency (Go Bailey!), (B) Have the spastic wedding planner ingest shrimp that she’s highly allergic to and the team of wedding-doctors have to perform an emergency tracheotomy, (C) All the other nonsense of this episode. SERIOUSLY – so saccharine. But also quite funny.

Honestly, I think I feel cheated out of the Arizona send off, but apparently the series is actually coming to an end so we only have to wait two more seasons to see her, Callie, and Cristina (and regrettably probably Kepner too) back for one final hoorah. It was a beautiful tribute that we snuck Callie’s version of ‘The Story’ into the final moments of the show. WOW. (I mean short of getting Sara Ramirez there in person that’s the next best thing?)

So many awkward questions. Like who was that other adorable little black child running around with Zola and why have we never seen her until today? And since when is Hellmouth in love with Meredith???? Also did I completely miss the whole Qadri/Jackson thing?! But bigger than anything else – OMG TEDDY!!!!

And OMG TEDDY bomb-dropping like that. Because, you know, you don’t just get off a 12-hour flight from Germany to ask the chief of surgery at Grey-Sloan for a job … unless you desperately have a reason to live in Seattle. Like … you know … being pregnant with the Head of Trauma’s baby? BOOM! Because that happened. Of course it happens. We haven’t had a pregnancy in forever on Grey’s so … we all knew it was coming … we just didn’t know it would be coming like THAT. Or maybe we did … you know Owen’s finally all settled up playing house with Amelia and Becky and Leo … so naturally his double-dip-disaster is going to show up pregnant. But hey – at least she gets to be interim chief? Welcome back, Kim Raver!

ABC

We made Meredith a minister. That was cute. And really sweet, all the ferry boats. Yay. And begrudgingly, the ooey-gooey sweetness of Kepner & Matthew 2.0 was actually very touching. Doesn’t really explain her exit … and is she taking Harriet with her? Is Matthew still going to be around on the show from time to time to hand Harriet off to Jackson b/c Sara Drew will be busy on what is sure to be a flop – that new Cagney & Lacey thing? Joy of joys. [Editor’s note: CBS passed on the Cagney & Lacey pilot so …]

Loved Bailey’s reaction to her Trailblazer check. THAT was priceless. And we did have a great deal of focus on Arizona, nice to see actual closure happening with her character, though we’re all sad to see her go and still a bit disappointed as to how that whole thing was handled. Her wedding dress rocked. And Meredith was rocking the hell out of the blue dress she wore. Where can I get one?

I feel like now that we have a summer to mull over how exactly things at Grey-Sloan are going to be handled … we can assume the following:

DRAMA in the form of preggo Teddy being the interim chief of Surgery. Because she’s got Owen’s baby and Amelia is still clearly in love with Owen (and he’s still clearly in love with her … maybe they’ll all migrate to Utah and figure it out.)

Jo & Alex may spend the first several episodes of Season 15 living in Boston. Like Cristina did that one time in the tundra … with Mr. Feeney.

And the rest is as usual. Season 14 has indeed been all over the place, but not without its moments. As addicted as we all are, we can only hope that in these final two seasons, they really do everyone a good and proper and thorough justice.

Grey’s Anatomy will return in the Fall, Thursdays at 8:00 PM on ABC.
