Grey’s Anatomy :: Cold As Ice

ABC

UGH. UGH. UGH!!!! Total cop out. Shonda, you’re fired. First of all – Meredith and her ‘I came back’ theory is total crap. She had Cristina Yang shouting down the ER with Derek weeping love tears outside. And you know, the series would have ended midway through Season 3 if she hadn’t come back. Wishy-washy doctors who only suddenly now like her living by their honor of ‘not dead til warm and dead’ with guilt-complex-driven Maggie shocking her to keep from letting the baby-momma of her current fling die on her watch – and Jackson’s desperate hail-mary ‘If you exist I’ll do anything’ nonsense? NOT. THE. SAME.

Spoilers – she lives. UGH.

And then she goes on her Jesus diatribe about how she wasn’t really dead so nobody actually brought her back. From the dead. And then thanks Owen for always being the one to bring her back. (True story, he flew to the pig farm in Molena and brought her back from Iraq … still think that was unexplored storyline there but since he’s got Amelia all patched up now …)

And what’s worse is we’ve dragged this Matthew fella back into it. Like we couldn’t think of a better way to write her out? (And apparently she wasn’t diva enough to get an actual death?) Because, you know in Shondaland, you only get really shitty write-offs if you’re an on-set diva. (And BTW – did anyone else catch how she was totally sending up a big F-U to Ellen Pompeo in her ‘defense tweet’ regarding Kelly McCreary? Where she blatantly states that McCreary ‘…who ALWAYS shows up and dedicates herself to the stories she is asked to tell,’ … because, you know, it’s really important to know that obviously OTHER people aren’t doing that but since we don’t want a death-write-off we can’t actually say that …)

ABC

At any rate, THANK GOD they brought Nicole Herman into this episode. Because otherwise it would have been a waste of 45 minutes. NOBODY LIKES KEPNER. Even Alex doing his little ‘at first I hated her …’ bit, where he was all monotone and really dull? BECAUSE HE STILL HATES HER.

So Nicole Herman returning – no one saw that coming!! Ba-dum-dum. Love, love, LOVE the tie-in and throw back to Koracick. OF COURSE he slept with Nicole. Love it. And I love how Amelia panics over nothing. And we’re super happy that she’s giving Arizona an even easier way off the show. And Bailey’s whole ‘I thought you were a Pixie Stick’ … THAT was priceless. It reminds me of that whole melt down she had initially about Robins with Chief Webber and he’s like ‘is there anyone you do like? You thought Shepard was a haircut, you didn’t like Hahn, you thought Sloan was a hussy …’ and apparently Arizona was a Pixie stick.

ABC

More interesting than that, however, is that she’s getting all reconcile-y about Callie – she said Callie’s been really sweet about the whole thing, she got uber gushy when she was explaining the whole how Kepner and Matthew reconnected over each other’s pain, and is doing what’s right for Sofia … so maybe – just maybe – as we see her getting into New York with Sofia – Callie can open the door?? (Obviously she and Perfect-Derek-Killing-Penny didn’t work out.) Can we please – for just two seconds get Sara Ramirez back???

And did anyone else notice how Ben was back – YET AGAIN? Like, I get that he’s right up the street … but was Addison back every five seconds in the first month of Private Practice? (And yes, their universes still crossed because clearly we were having crossovers whenever Private Practice was hurting for viewers …) but we’re not even a month into Station 19 … can they really be hurting for viewers that badly? Hurry on back, Ben, because you might not get picked up for a second season at the fire house.

Ultimately a huge let down … and no, not just because Kepner didn’t die. But really, the way they handled everything – I mean to the line it was bad recycling of plot, and even less passionately. Oooh – closing moment with Meredith – did she retire Derek’s scrub cap for good just then??? I hope not. Poor ferry boats. Poor Derek.

Next week looks like a snoozer of a season finale. Guess they feel like they don’t have to try too hard since it’s been renewed for another two seasons? But I mean … ABC can still cancel at any time … though I suppose she’d just continue it on Netflix then. And let’s face it … we’d all go with her.

The Grey’s Anatomy season finale airs Thursday, May 17 at 8:00 PM on ABC.
