Grey’s Anatomy :: Judgment Day

ABC

Okay, first of all … what the what the what the what?!? Are we THAT out of storyline that our go-to had to be ‘let’s get 3/4 of Grey-Sloan staff accidentally high?’ I guess so. That said, it was pretty hilarious. Completely superfluous fluff-n-stuff, to be honest, but still giggle-worthy. And the bigger issue, which gets buried among the pot-cookies (Cannabis Peanut Butter Cookies from the two lesbian moms from a few weeks ago who didn’t have breast cancer), is the whole sexual harassment scandal that Catherine Avery has been covering up!

I do love the fact that we got that big speech out of Catherine, even if it was tainted with the potential ‘pot high.’ Because she’s absolutely right. Thirty years ago it was a different time; women couldn’t just speak up or speak out against the people doing the harassing, and if they did they most likely lost their jobs and their reputation along with it. (That hard-as-nails line about ‘taking it right along with their morning coffee’ really drives it home.) And the intention of what she did was good, giving them money so that they could still have a leg to stand on … even if it’s viewed by most as ‘hush money,’ her logic behind it was not misplaced. Thirty years ago, you either shut up or got shut out – and if she was able to provide them with monetary assistance on the ‘shut up’ side of the fight, so that they weren’t completely shut out and essentially blacklisted, then she was fighting the fight the only way she could.

That said, once again Shonda’s all over hot-topic issues. And it’s more than just sexual harassment happening in the workplace, it’s delving into how do you handle an institute and foundation, that ultimately served the greater good, being disrupted from the inside out because of decades of unacceptable behavior? In Shondaland, the Harper Avery Award is what motivated surgeons to do better in the field. (On a much more minute scale it’s what Tonys, Emmys, Oscars, etc. do for the entertainment field … and would their ceremony completely be abolished and toppled if it were let out that one of the founders were guilty of sexual harassment incidences that turned into hush-money legal agreements?)

So thinking about that, it’s a double-edged sword we’re dealing with. Despite all of that heavy stuff, the other mega-heavy, which definitely balanced out all of the high-humor this episode, was Owen and Amelia. Not Owen getting the kid … which everyone seems to forget he’s fostering (yes, with intention to adopt but it doesn’t always go that way straight away) … but the fact that this kid is bringing Amelia straight back into his life. In a positive way. So they may get back together. And wasn’t the issue that SHE couldn’t put herself through having another baby? So if it’s an adopted baby, maybe they’ll work out?

ABC

I think Alex’s being high was the most hilarious of the bunch, it’s sort of exactly what you’d expect Alex to be. Also, did anyone else get confused when Arizona was having her Callie/Carina crisis? She said something about ‘They all leave me’ and it almost sounded like there was someone in-between Callie and Carina … but I don’t recall her dating anyone seriously between leaving/ending things with Callie and Carina showing up. Except Murphy? Which doesn’t count because that wasn’t all that serious. Anyway, Arizona is a mess.

April is less of a mess, and what in the world was she doing with her throat for the ‘Harper Avery Funeral’? I loved her line too. ‘I wanted a Harper Avery. I had a Jackson Avery. Not the same thing.’ This whole Avery nonsense is going to be a mess.

Sort of felt bad for DeLuca, just laying there missing Sam. Aww. And since when do we fire interns straight out the gate for being stupid?!? Didn’t Izzie get to stay for her entire internship after cutting the L-VAD wire on a patient? Hasn’t Meredith made multiple stupids all throughout her internship, residency, and fellowship? Didn’t Lexie and all the others chop each other up when they were practicing on themselves? And I’m sure there are others all along the way who did stupid – like Cristina covering for Burke – and didn’t get fired, despite putting themselves and other patients and interns in way, way, WAY more danger than Roy did. That said, I have no love whatsoever for any of these interns except Qadri and Parker, so … BYE!

ABC

Loved the ‘teaching moment’ for Jo. (Still can’t believe how ready that Cancer Pen is and WHY WHY WHY isn’t a real thing being developed?!? Also – gotta love Bailey and her ‘I’m developing my TrailBlazer with a sex toy company.’ I mean, she’s got the right idea … her thing goes up there … they already make things that go up there … makes sense!) Still don’t think we needed a whole pot-cookie episode for her to have that teaching moment, but it was nice to see Meredith finally doing that hardcore teaching moment. And as always nice to see the Webber doing his ‘chief of the interns’ thing.

Looks like the Harper Avery Sex Scandal is going to dominate next week’s episode, so the return of nurse Olivia AKA Syph Nurse is going to be deeply overshadowed. Wompwomp. But hey – Seattle Grace Mercy West almost didn’t exist after the plane-crash bankrupted them … and then the Harper Avery foundation fixed it. So I’m sure they’ll figure something out. They existed before the foundation and surely having been up and running with world class surgeons, legacies of both the dead and the living, they’ll manage it without the foundation. They’ve got another two seasons to go on ABC (at minimum …) so they’ll figure something out, even if it does mean falling back to ‘Seattle Grace’ days.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM on ABC.
