Dynasty :: An ex-wife is forever

Screengrab

Well, Alexis certainly has established her dominance within the Carrington family pretty quickly, almost as if she’d never left. Like she told Sammy Joe, ‘The marriage may not last, but an ex-wife is forever.’ She’s going to make sure that holds true … but she has to learn some boundaries and respect if she’s going to be anything more than the Queen Bitch Supreme. A title she’s probably okay with, but how long can viewers put up with her pitting her children against one another? Besides, Alexis is supposed to be the nemesis of Cristal and so far all they’ve done is exchange a few snide words with each other.

Hopefully at some point Alexis and Fallon will bury the hatchet, but that’s not going to happen as long as she keeps messing with Steven and Sammy Joe. Apparently Alexis still has some friends on the Atlanta police force (not to mention how the Carrington staff still seems to adore her) since she has somehow come into possession of Sam’s long record of arrests for shoplifting. Still not keen on his engagement to Steven, despite her fake happy face, Alexis decided to take Sam shopping for an outfit to wear to the engagement party at the mansion (and boy have we come a long way since the original series for Blake to throw his gay son an engagement party — that would have ended with Steven’s intended probably ‘falling’ off a balcony).

Sam is thrilled to be getting closer to Steven’s mom, telling her he looks good in anything — that may be true but not everything looks good on him, including that outfit which Alexis called a costume from a community theatre production of Hair. Yeah, like most of this show’s costumes, it was odd. And what’s up with Sam’s new haircut all of a sudden? Anyway, unbeknownst to Sam, Alexis could not care less about shopping, she’s more interested in shoplifting and plants a watch in his backpack, hoping to get him arrested. Now, seriously, if Fallon hadn’t intervened and replanted the watch on Alexis, would Steven have taken her word over his soon-to-be husband’s? Who knows. He was quick to bail her out of jail, believing Fallon was behind the whole thing to get back at Alexis.

But Sam and Fallon’s ‘husband’ Liam were on her side with Liam suggesting some ‘drug therapy’ that his parents went through, releasing all their truths while under the influence and making their relationship stronger than ever. Why not does Alexis and get her to admit to what she did … in the middle of the engagement party. In an elaborate Ocean’s Eleven scheme, the three of them got the drug (a Molly knockoff) into the champagne but … Fallon was distracted by the sight of Culhane who was there to pick up his belongings. For some reason he still didn’t tell her why he left, and although she said they could still be friends, he said that would never work.

But back to the plan, Fallon handed out the champagne and … of course she gave the wrong glass to Alexis. Poor Sam got the dose and launched into a musical number on the dining room table (and Rafael de la Fuente has a terrific voice, by the way) before passing out. That is one way to make an impression on friends and family … just not a good one. But somehow while attending to Sam, Alexis blurted out that attempting to drug her was worse than planting the watch on Sam and Steven finally realized that everyone was telling the truth about Alexis. The shenanigans also brought some non-contractual sparks to Liam and Fallon, and I say it’s about time.

Alexis’ presence on the property also drove a wedge between Blake and his staff. Furious that they have been attending to her needs more than those of him and his immediate family, he fired cook Mrs. Gunderson and then Anders, after he admitted to also assisting the ex-Mrs. Carrington (and rehiring Mrs. Gunderson). But Cristal, ever the voice of reason, is disappointed with Blake’s behavior and he admits that Alexis is having an influence on him as well, apologizing to Anders and offering back his job. It probably helped Anders’ cause (and Mrs. Gunderson’s) that the engagement party was a disaster even without the drugging of Sam.

But with all of that out of the way, there was some intriguing information about Culhane’s father. Well, first Cristal showed up and blurted out that Culhane was the family’s chauffeur — and mama Culhane was none too happy about being lied to by her son about being VP of Carrington Atlantic — and then she tried to make up for her faux pas by digging into his dad’s illness, finding a doctor who specializes in whatever he has (some form of leukemia that usually affects children), and then discovering that Carrington Atlantic may have been involved in contaminating the area where the Culhanes are from, which could have led to the illness. Returning to the hospital with the company records, Cristal is surprised to find … Blake there to greet her.

Ruh-roh.

Oh, and while trying to justify her behavior to Steven (she was afraid Sam would take Steven away from her after now just getting him back), she told him she didn’t want to lose another son. So now the cat is out of the bag. Blake, of course, revealed the existence and kidnapping of Adam many episodes ago, but this is the first time Steven is hearing this news that he has an older brother. Alexis said that’s where all her money went, trying to find her son. She believes he’s still alive because she has no proof he’s dead, so Steven is surely going to pump more Carrington cash into finding his long lost brother. Now the question is, when will we meet him? With only four episodes to go this season, he could make a last minute season finale cliffhanger appearance but luckily the show has been renewed for a second season, so at least this is a storyline that won’t be left dangling. Now, will the producers look for a well-known name to play Adam, or will they go for an unknown? Who would you cast?
