After last week’s highly anticipated return to Murder House, we got deeper into ‘Coven’ territory this week with a few surprises and answers to some nagging questions.
As the coven seeks more allies and power to fight Michael, Coco has discovered a new facet of her powers — she can correctly deduce the calorie count of food. When Cordelia asks her to play her part in this quest, Coco’s response is that she’s just a human nutrition label but she pitches in.
But not before she nearly choked to death on a cupcake and was saved by Mallory’s amazing power. Seeing her split open Coco’s neck and remove the cupcake, restoring her to life was enough for Zoe to tell Cordelia that she believes Mallory is the next true Supreme. But with the conniving warlocks willing to do anything to get Michael elevated to the position, Mallory has a steep hill to climb. But her powers, along with a little help from the others helped bring John Henry back from the ashes, so now he and Behold are in league with the coven.
Cordelia feels they need more power and she pays a visit to Dinah, who we now know was elevated to the voodoo queen after Marie Laveau was killed. Cordelia wants Dinah to summon Papa Legba to help send Michael back from whence he came, but Papa will only do requests for a price. And his price for this job is the souls of all of Cordelia’s girls. He already has one, and Nan makes a surprise appearance. Apparently she’s having a ball in Hell causing problems and eating candy … and she’s not really thrilled to see Cordelia based on her greeting. But she’d love to be with her friends again. Unfortunately, Cordelia is not about to give her girls to Legba so the deal is off and he and Nan return to the Underworld. Cordelia asks Dinah what else she can do to get Legba’s help but Dinah is quite clear that Legba makes an offer once, and she blew it.
Cordelia knows that there is only one other person who can help her — and no, it’s not her mother Fiona. Ever since Myrtle first turned up at the Outpost with Cordelia earlier in the season, I’ve been wondering how she was able to return because she was burned alive at the stake, her famous last word being ‘Balenciaga!’ And now we know Cordelia brought her back, against Myrtle’s wishes. But with 7 billion lives at stake, she had to do what she had to do and Myrtle understood. And seeing Cordelia’s power of resurrection only makes it that much clearer that Mallory is destined to be the next Supreme. And Myrtle needs to enlist the help of someone else, Bubbles McGee aka Evie Gallant (aka Joan Collins). Bubbles is a B-list actress working on a trashy movie called ‘A Christmas to Dismember” when Madison is sent to fetch her. The two engage in some witty, snide banter about their relative successes in Hollywood and while she prefers to hone her acting craft rather than her witchcraft, Bubbles agrees to go with Madison.
Myrtle tells Bubbles they need to stage a truce with the warlocks, prepare them a fancy meal to gain their trust and then Bubbles can use her powers to read their minds. And that she does, listening in on all of their plans including one that involves the death of the entire coven.
Warlock Baldwin Pennypacker has been working on a substance that will kill the witches, and only the witches. And when they arrive at the school, Cordelia quickly sends the powder up in flames, foiling Pennypacker’s plans. But he and Ariel taunt Cordelia and her fading powers … a little too much because she shows them who’s still boss by sealing their mouths shut. And with John Henry’s memory of the night he went up in flames, and Coco willing to take one for the team, they are also able to trap Miriam Mead and she and the two traitors are taken to the same place where Myrtle originally met her fate, all set ablaze for their crimes. And now that answers the question about the robotic Mrs. Mead.
But what comes next? Michael’s protectors are gone, there’s no help coming from the Underworld, so can a handful of witches and two warlocks take down the son of Satan and stop the Apocalypse from actually happening?
