Grey’s Anatomy :: Bad Reputation

ABC

Shonda again remains on the top of her game when it comes to potent relevancy to what’s happening in the world. Delving further into the Sexual Harassment scandal of Harper Avery, the Foundation and its 72 hospitals, which includes Grey-Sloan, is facing ruination. And it’s a really sticky situation.

No one wants to denigrate, belittle, silence, hide, or blot-out the experiences of these women. No one wants to blame the victim. But Jackson perfectly illustrates how giving the victim justice by allowing them to topple the foundation is selfish justice for those victims only. In this Harper Avery Foundation instance, it topples 72 hospitals. He even says ‘every person working in this hospital multiplied by 72. Thousands of doctors, nurses, and important medical workers out of jobs, and thousands of families in mortal peril because of it.’

And because the world is so used to dealing with right and wrong in extremes, it’s either ‘we keep doing wrong by silencing the women’ or ‘the only way we can right this wrong is by letting these victims topple the foundation.’ Not everyone is 100% evil. As Meredith said, Harper Avery had everything except decency. And to undo the good the foundation, which unfortunately bares his besmirched name, has done to right those wrongs would be an even bigger wrong in itself.

Shonda’s penning for this episode finally found the solution that gets everyone moving in the right direction without destroying the good that came out of the evil. Take note, world. What Jackson and Meredith penned was stunning; the way they intend to move forward, giving voices to women – as Meredith said, why do they always fall back on blaming the women (women do it to each other all the time) – by restarting the foundation with all of its hard work under Catherine Fox’s name. (Anybody else wondering why she’s not taking Webber’s name? He’s got clout with that name …) Case closed. Drop the mic. Walk away.

Syph nurse’s return was rather boring. And really unfortunate. She was cheeky and cute when she was bitchy before. Now she’s just obnoxious. Of all the people they could have brought back … #stillwaitingonjoe

I like that April is giving Maggie the tools she needs to handle Jackson. Nothing like getting sound advice from the found-again-Christian-ex-wife of your current lover. And why did DeLuca end up on Meredith’s couch? DeLuca and Maggie were a million years ago so why did she take him in??? It’s a House-of-Meredith thing … if you live there you must take in strays. (Remember when Derek brought Lexie home because she had nowhere to go? Remember when Jackson and April moved in because Reid and Charles died in the shooting leaving them with no place to go?)

And talking of strays … what on earth is Amelia thinking?!? The whole Ollie-Richard Amelia-Betty thing … while it’s a nice parallel … I just – it’s too ‘meet-cute’ for getting her and Owen back together. Wasn’t the baby enough? Or is this ‘let’s heal Betty so she can take Leo back and then we can both be whole and healed by the experience (Amy & Owen) and then realize we *do* belong together and *can* have a baby of our own?’ Sooooo predictable. Next.

Roy the loser intern and his big bully lawyer brother. First of all, he wasn’t fired wrongfully because a superior gave him cannabis cookies. He was fired, and rightly so, for LYING about having ingested cannabis and then proceeding to recklessly endanger himself, his co-workers, and patients, while attempting to get involved with surgery while high. This, however logical and totally accurate, will not fly in Shondaland and will regrettably, result in Arizona Robbins’ being terminated. (She’s been let go anyhow … and they’ve got to give her an out, which is looking more and more like she’s moving to New York to be closer to Callie so Sophia stops whining about school!) PS – isn’t it ironic how Arizona, who hated the idea of being a mom, is now helicopter-coddle mom?

Sucks to be Alex. Do we remember that Aaron got committed? Whatever happened to his little sister? And yeah, his mom probably is dead, but then again so is his dad. Nobody on Grey’s has living parents except Jackson & Maggie … and their parents are married. To each other. (Oh and Bailey. And I guess April. And Owen, whose mom married a hot young stud. And Mrs. Shepherd is still alive somewhere. Come back, Tyne Daly!) And Arizona maybe? We never met her dad though she’s talked about him a lot. Actually, they all have living parents … except Meredith, and now apparently Alex. Strike that. Let’s just be sad for Alex’s potentially dead mom. She wasn’t going to get invited to the wedding anyhow.

LOVE that we got to see Zola. And that she tells it like it is. ‘Why does Aunt Maggie’s friend not have to take a bath ever and we do?’ Meredith is such a rock star mom. I’d want Meredith to be my mom. Though I’d be really sad if dead-Derek was my dead-Dad. Still hate the interns. Oh well, with any luck, they too will be gone by the end of the season. Jo was the only one to make it out of her intern year. I think. (Now I struggle to remember who was interns with her … it was Edwards, who bbq’d a rapist and then quit; Ross, who flew the coop to Zurich with Cristina; Brooks, who died, Murphey, who got fired/asked to leave and then came back and then left again, and Ben, who replaced Brooks, and then quit to become a Fire Fighter. What happened to the chief’s whole ‘there will only be two of you?’ And isn’t it hilarious that in that episode back in season 7 right after Cristina flamed out from her post-gun-to-the-head surgery, when Alex and Mer were sitting in that room before Stark comes in to yell at them and they both say, ‘who knew it would be us two, I figured it would be me and Cristina?’ PSYCHIC!!!)
