The first season debuted on local Minneapolis TV station KTMA and was then picked up by Comedy Central where it aired for seven seasons. After the cancellation, the Sci-Fi Channel acquired the series and produced three more seasons, also giving the crew access to classic films in the Universal Pictures vault. The series originally starred Joel Hodgson with his robot pals Tom Servo, Crow and Gypsy. Hodgson exited the series after five seasons with head writer Mike Nelson taking over until the show’s end. One feature film was also produced with the crew riffing on the classic sci-fi movie This Island Earth. In 2015, Hodgson launched a crowdfunding campaign to produce 12 new episodes. The campaign was such a success that they were able to produce 14 episodes and Netflix picked the revival up for streaming distribution. A second Netflix season premieres November 22, 2018 (Thanksgiving, aka Turkey Day), just two days before the show’s 30th anniversary. There were also two fan conventions held in the show’s hometown of Minneapolis. To date, 211 episodes have been produced.
