Trolls World Tour :: Another bright and fun DreamWorks film

Universal Pictures

We now have made it to the part of the Coronavirus where a movie that was originally supposed to hit theaters was released on VOD instead. This could be a thing that closes movie theaters in the future. While watching Trolls World Tour at home, I was excited to see the sequel to the 2016 vibrant DreamWorks animated film, but I was also worried that this would be a sign that we would see the end of movie theaters.

Trolls (Blu-Ray + Digital)The first Trolls was a surprisingly successful and fun film. Most animated movies that are a hit nowadays generate a sequel. The Trolls sequel takes a lot away from the first movie like Bergens and adds a lot to the film. Poppy and Branch discover that there are six different Troll tribes devoted a different genre of music. Queen Barb, who loves rock, wants to destroy all the different tribes’ music and have rock be the overall music that rules all.

Easily the best thing about Trolls World Tour is the exploration of the different music genres. Genres such as rock, pop, hip hop, techno, funk, and classical are explored in the film. Music from many different artists hype scenes up and make the different tribes enjoyable to watch. Both Trolls movies rely heavily on music to provide upbeat moments and add to the story. The first film had a lot of great original music from Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake that ended up being popular years later, but the newest film was lacking strong original music. The original music in the film wasn’t catchy and didn’t add anything to the movie.

The first film had a good progression of Poppy and Branch’s relationship. Branch had no interest in being Poppy’s friend. I was excited to see World Tour to have more of Poppy and Branch together, but their relationship was the weakest part of the film. Poppy was so focused on finding Queen Barb and convincing her not to destroy all the Troll tribes that the writers forgot to continue to add to her relationship with Branch. Branch was more of a side character in the film and I found that to be disappointing.

DreamWorks still managed to make Trolls World Tour vibrant and catchy even if it had different types of music than pop throughout the film. All the tribes based on the music genres explored in the film have distinct looks to them One of my favorite tribes were the Techno Trolls. They looked completely different than your average Troll plus they played some fun music as well! The first film was only limited to the Pop Trolls in terms of bright characters, but with Trolls World Tour, there were a lot more characters that stood out.

I didn’t enjoy Trolls World Tour as much as the first film. It’s a serviceable sequel with bright fun moments that felt thin at times. DreamWorks animated films are usually a hit and miss for me. It is not as good as the How to Train Your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda series but it significantly better than films like The Boss Baby and Bee Movie.
