Last week’s episode of The Orville featured one of the best storylines for the series. It offered one of the show’s main characters turning on the crew aboard the Orville and eventually redeeming himself in the end. The episode ended with Ed Mercer and Kelly Grayson speaking with the Union about their future with Isaac. Both the Union and Mercer brought up some good points about Isaac’s presence on the ship. I was curious as to how they would bring him back onto the ship and if it would create tension amongst the group. The newest episode, ‘Blood of Patriots’, doesn’t even acknowledge the fact that Isaac was responsible for many deaths of Union members. This is another example of how important storylines in the show aren’t carried into a new episode.
This week’s newest episode starts out with what could a successful peace treaty amongst the Union and the Krill. As soon the Orville arrives to meet up with the Krill, they start shooting at one of their own shuttles for some unknown reason, and the Krill requests emergency docking on the Orville. On the shuttle, the crew finds a human pilot with a terrified woman. Quickly, Gordon recognizes the man as Orin, a man who used to be friends with him when they were younger. When Orin and Gordon were younger, they were attacked by Krill and Orin saved Gordon’s life, but lost his wife in the process. Orin and his daughter were captured by the Krill and spent 20 years in their prison but escaped and found the Orville.
What is interesting about this episode is the battle Ed is dealing with. It was confirmed by both the Krill and the Union database that Orin killed many Krill by destroying several of their ships. The Krill would agree to a peace treaty if Ed turns Orin over, but Gordon has expressed that Orin is a decent guy and doesn’t deserve to be returned after what he has gone through. Ed is weighing all his options and trying to do the right thing. Mercer is a great leader, but he was given a chance to strengthen his role on the ship. Another great performance on the show came from Gordon, who hasn’t had many chances throughout the series to express his personality and thoughts. We know he is a funny guy but don’t know much about his past, and this episode did a good job of giving something for us to connect with.
This episode offered the right amount of tension throughout with many hints as to what Orin’s past was really like. Several crew members knew something wasn’t right with Orin’s story about his time in Krill prison with his daughter. There is a lot of mystery regarding the new character aboard the ship, which halts the peace treaty that could happen. It is revealed that Orin, and what we thought to be his daughter Layna, both hate the Krill and have been using his blood to destroy Krill ships. Layna is a humanoid from another star system and when her blood is mixed with nitrogen, it can be explosive. Orin took storage cells from the Orville to transport her blood to destroy another Krill ship. He convinced Gordon to take him to the Krill ship so they could end the peace treaty together, since both Gordon and Orin have strong feelings against the Krill.
I like how this episode set up a future where the Orville can work alongside the Krill. The Krill have appeared many times throughout the series and it certainly would be interesting if the two could get along. The second season is almost over and if The Orville is renewed for a third season, adding the Krill to the Orville would something interesting.
The Orville returns Thursday, March 21 at 9:00 PM on Fox.
