The Mandalorian and The Child

Disney+

Episode Two of The Mandalorian, ‘The Child’, has dropped and it continues to be an absolute delight.

I did not give enough credit in the first episode but here let me say that the score for this series is amazing. Those western feels and still feeling wholly in the Star Wars universe, the score is one of those rare ones I could see myself buying and just listening to on its own. It’s available streaming now by the way, go take a listen.

But really this episode was just more of the same, that is being a fantastic and well-paced story with action, world building, and surprises. With a badass fight almost immediately off the top we still got those moments of stillness and scenic beautiful shots as well. Really the pacing is just perfect, giving us just the perfect mix of action and downtime.

Then there was the child, who I’m just calling baby Yoda for now. Come on, is that not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen? If there aren’t baby Yoda toys out for Christmas Disney is dropping the ball. The child is also amazingly emotive and I can’t be sure but I believe its a mixture of CG and puppetry. All I know is if this kid gets hurt we gonna riot.

I am noticing though that every element is sort of a remix of something classic, the two main other bounty hunters we have seen so far resembled Bossk and IG88, who were both featured in the first Boba Fett scene we ever got. Now in this episode, Jawas were the main antagonist.

We can all agree though, Jawas are thieving trash people and they worked great as an annoying hindrance to our Mandalorian’s journey. The randomness of his ship being dismantled and the ensuing chase of the Jawa rover, then the journey to get some weird hairy egg, it all struck me as the sort of weird side quest an 80s movies would have, usually derailing the main story but being thoroughly entertaining. Though we did learn a couple of very interesting things in the process.

The smaller one was that weapons are part of Mandalorian religion. I’m dying to find out more about the tribe and these little tidbits keep me interested. The big revelation though was when baby Yoda force holds the giant space rhino confirming many people’s theories that this child is force sensitive. What this means moving forward is anyone’s guess but I’m excited to find out.

Oh and once again the painted images under the credits were amazing. Two weeks running I’ve sat through the entire credits sequence. The Mandalorian is quickly becoming a highlight to my week. I’m even enjoying the anticipation between episodes rather than binging everything at once.
