Resident Alien :: Secrets

Syfy

When we say something’s afoot on the latest episode of Resident Alien, we mean that literally … someone found a foot in the lake. The news of which instantly makes Harry regret tossing his human counterpart into said lake. But how is an alien supposed to know the body was going to break through the ice? He doesn’t know how Earth works. And that makes his mission to find the body even more urgent as the way-too-gung-ho sheriff orders the entire lake dragged, even though the mayor insists they don’t have the budget or the equipment for such a large-scale operation. Luckily, human Harry washes up on the shore behind his cabin and alien Harry is able to move the body into the house before anyone but the police dog sees him.

Of course, that causes more complications as Asta and D’Arcy invite themselves in to use Harry’s bathroom. What Harry doesn’t understand is that D’Arcy is more than a little miffed at him for not following up with her after their bowling ‘date’. Failing to read her anger, D’Arcy tells him point blank that she and Asta are going to a party at the home of town hottie JT. So there. Harry just wants them to leave.

And before he knows it, the sheriff and deputy are at his door to let him know they are wrapping up the search for the night, but the dog bolts into the house and heads for the door to the basement. The sheriff is immediately suspicious and follows the dog down the basement steps to the freezer. Opening it, he discovers … meat. Lots and lots of meat, including the dog’s favorite, bison. So it was the bison that lured him to the freezer, but after the police leave Harry goes back to rearrange some things in the freezer, making sure to cover Harry’s body a bit better.

Harry still has other problems like finding the pieces of his ship. Just as he’d located a third fragment, an avalanche was intentionally triggered, burying the spot again. No word though on what happened with the hikers who found the suspended body last week. Harry’s biggest problem is Max, and Max’s mother came to Harry to discuss Max’s absurd fantasies that Harry is an alien. Harry suggests they leave town, but that’s not an option. Shooing her away with a suggestion she spend more time with Max, she does just that … at school where she works, totally embarrassing Max who is obviously already a target of bullying. But he may have a new ally in classmate Sahar, a young Muslim girl he helped after she was bullied. She believes Max’s story about Harry and joins forces expose his alien nature. But can she actually see who he really is. That part was unclear.

Asta is facing some issues at the doctor’s office. It seems a prescription pad has gone missing. At the party at JT’s, it suddenly becomes painfully obvious that the party is a high school party thrown by JT Jr. Oops. After being called a cougar (and D’Arcy realizing the guy she’s dancing with has braces), they locate office intern Jay sleeping in a chair. Asta and D’Arcy take the girl home so she can get some sleep. On the way out, another kid asks Asta if she wants some pills. She grabs the bottle and sees it’s Doc Hodges’ prescription, but it was filled after he died. It seems clear at this point that Jay took the pad and is writing bogus prescriptions.

Which is concerning to Asta, who is just as attached to the girl as she was/is to the doc. In a flashback, we see the doctor and a young Asta pulling up at what appears to be the same house where Jay lives now. Doc takes a baby from Asta and takes it to the couple at the house. At breakfast, Asta breaks down with her father, saying the baby was a girl. Is Jay Asta’s daughter? That would certainly explain now why she is so invested in the teenager.

Resident Alien continues to charm, peeling back new layers of Harry, who is convinced now that he’s beginning to experience more human emotions, as well as giving up deeper insights into the people of Patience, Colorado. It’s definitely one of the best, most original shows of the year so far.
