Preacher :: Soul Happy Go Go

AMC

Well we finally got to see what Hitler’s been up to since he escaped from Hell, thanks to Eugene. He’s working at a sandwich shop under the name Hilter … and planning his new takeover of the world. But the Saint shows up with Eugene in tow and intends to drag him back to Hell as well. But that’s all we get of them, and with three episodes remaining, it’s baffling as to what’s going to happen with these characters.

The real meat of the story involves Jesse offering to be the Messiah as long as he gets his soul — and Genesis — back, but Starr has to go through Marie first, and she’s not about to let Jesse go until she gets what she’s owed — all those souls. It just so happens that The Grail owns the company that has been collecting souls (as we saw in season two) and has them stored at a facility in Osaka, Japan. So Starr decides that Lara will go to break into the facility and bring the souls back for Marie as a payment for letting him borrow Jesse. Make no mistake, Marie loves Jesse but she will kill him before she let’s him get away from her without paying his debt, so if anything goes wrong with the mission, it could cost Jesse his life.

And what could possibly go wrong with Lara, and her hilariously complex cover story, off in Osaka? Especially after Starr also decides that Tulip will go with her. And Tulip has to wear a white Grail suit and adhere to a cover identity that is not the one she always uses. The fact that Tulip and Lara despise each other was already being tested on the flight to Osaka … and Jody, who was along for the ride presumably to keep the peace but he seems to enjoy plucking Tulip’s nerves as well. This is going to be one long 16 hour flight.

But Marie does allow Jesse to leave with Starr and things are not quite as promised. At the Grail’s new facility, Starr starts talking to Jesse about something he has to do and then he hands him a gun. The elevator doors open and All Father is standing there in all of his grossness. And Jesse shoots him dead. This presumably will keep Humperdoo from assuming the Messiahship, but will it stop the coming Apocalypse?

Meanwhile Cassidy is beginning to fit in nicely with Les Enfants du Sang, and his relationship with Eccarius is moving in a surprising direction. When Lisa, the young woman who originally went on the blind date with Cass, is selected to become the next one of the group to be turned, she wants Cass to do it but he’s still wrestling with the whole vampire thing. But she tells him how Eccarius has missions set up all over the world where the newly turned are dispatched to help bridge the gap between the living and the undead. Turning Lisa would be the best thing Cassidy could do for their kind.

He’s still not sure about that so he and Eccarius enjoy another night on the town which turns sour when F.J. and some hired vampire hunters show up and attempt to extract Cassidy for Starr. Holding Eccarius at bay with some lights that mimic sunlight, Cass goes into action, killing them all except F.J. who has to report back to Starr that the mission has failed … again. Cassidy blames himself for what happened and for Eccarius’ burns, but Eccarius assures him it is not his fault and that somehow leads to them engaging in a very deep kiss.

Cass agrees to turn Lisa, and Eccarius has also brought in a pair of his and his coffins for them to sleep in. Cass really isn’t down with that old stereotype but he appreciates the gesture. Everyone bids Lisa farewell, and she gets in the car with Eccarius, excited to spread the good word about vampires. Except … there is no mission. It’s all a ruse and Eccarius brutally kills Lisa, draining her of her blood. But what’s his game? After the bloodbath, he finds Cassidy snoozing in the coffin so he climbs in, they start making out and he closes the lid. But it’s not going to take long for Cass to find out what Eccarius has done, and it’s probably not going to end well.

Preacher airs Sundays at 10:00 PM on AMC.
