Preacher :: When worlds collide

AMC

There was certainly a lot happening in this week’s installment of Preacher. One thing’s for sure, all of the goofiness of season two is gone. With Jesse’s return to Angelville, his old self is coming back but … he may have more tricks up his sleeve than it appears on the surface.

For the moment, Jesse appears to be under total control of his Gran’ma Marie. He owes her a ton of souls and the only way to get them is to re-open The Tombs, the Angelville version of a fight club where those who owe Marie battle it out to the death (or near death), the loser apparently forfeiting their soul to her to help prolong her life. With Jody and TC discovering Cassidy’s true identity, Jesse sees The Tombs as the only way to save his friend because he can be chopped up into little pieces but as long as he gets a bag of blood afterwards, he can come back again and again.

And after he threw Cassidy into the arena, that’s exactly what Jesse did — dismembered his body and packed him up in a box to be shipped to New Orleans for his own safety. But, giving Cass that bag of blood for the trip probably wasn’t the best idea because he didn’t stay packed away long enough to leave the shipping store. Leaving his hand behind so that TC thought Cass chewed it off to escape also left Cassidy to do a poor man’s version of Ash from Evil Dead, here with a long blade duct taped to his wrist, returning to The Tombs to fight Jesse but most importantly to get back the love potion that fell from his pocket during the last fight.

While Jesse is dealing with Cass, Tulip is bringing Sabina back to Angelville to help break the spell that’s keeping Jesse captive. But Tulip learns that there was a relationship between young Sabina and Jesse, one that ended badly when she bad-mouthed his Gran’ma and Jesse called her trash. That didn’t set well with her older brother who confronted Jesse at The Tombs, but that ended with Jesse choking him to death, so Sabina is not about to help Jesse Custer in any way, shape or form. It’s all quite a lot for Tulip to digest, so she puts Sabina in the trunk and returns to Angelville to a parking lot full of cars. Following a young man whose car alarm was going off, Tulip walked in on the action between Jesse and Cassidy. Jesse kept telling Cass to stay down, but all he wanted was to get that potion. Jesse, still trying to make it look like he was going to kill Cassidy, ended up staking him in front of Tulip and everyone else.

But Tulip knew this was all for Cass’ own good, and she left Angelville with Cassidy. But the poor Irish vampire quickly came to realize that this journey with Tulip was not going to be an on-going adventure. She flat out told him that she doesn’t love him, and he considered using the potion on her but when they got to a bus stop with a New Orleans destination, she urged him to leave for his own safety. He reluctantly boarded the bus, but did not seem to notice the woman two seats behind him … Lara Featherstone, Herr Starr’s henchwoman. Now what on earth could have put her on that particular bus at that particular moment, and what does she have in store for Cassidy?

There’s still been no sight of Eugene or Hitler, but that seems about to change. The episode was bookended by a scene in Hell where Jesse’s old nemesis The Saint of Killers was summoned to meet with Beelzebub himself, just a man trying to run a business who’s looking to expand his empire. But first he has to attend to The Saint’s insubordination, flayed by the Angel of Death, leaving nothing but an exposed spine when she was done.

But that didn’t deter The Saint. No, Satan was ready to make a deal with him now and The Saint said that he wanted to return to kill the Preacher. Satan isn’t really down with that but … in this case The Saint can kill all the preachers he wants … on one condition. He has to bring back the two escapees, Eugene and Hitler, alive because having something like that happens just isn’t good for his reputation and puts his expansion plans in jeopardy. A deal is set.
