At about the midway point of the third season, Preacher feels like it’s a bit all over the place but getting all of its ducks in a row for what is to come in the second half. If I have any gripes about the season thus far, it’s the distinct lack of Arseface and Hitler. But we finally got a glimpse of Eugene’s return to Earth this week, albeit a very brief one. Eugene returned to Annville, Texas to find nothing but a massive blast crater from the end of season one (yeah, he’s been in Hell that long).
Being one of the devout, Eugene wondered why God would bring him back if everyone he knew is dead, but he takes it in stride and assumes he has a greater purpose in life. Somehow Eugene ends up in an orphanage and minutes later is adopted. Unfortunately his new dad is The Saint of Killers, who shackles Eugene and tells him they have another stop to make before returning to Hell. And that was pretty much all we saw of Eugene this week. But, hey, it was something.
Back in Angelville, Jesse is still wrestling with the consequences of Tulip’s actions, i.e. killing Marie, who is alive but not well due to the adrenaline pumped into her heart. She needs to feed and Jesse owes her a debt, which she plans to collect from Tulip. Jesse manages to convince TC and Jody that one little soul is not going to sustain Marie, but he has a plan. And that plan requires the participation of Tulip to succeed — a bank robbery. No, they’re not looking for money, they want all the souls that have been collected by Madame Boyd that are kept in a bank vault.
It was a little more complicated than expected with saliva needed to unlock Sabina’s safe deposit box — and the plan to get the saliva went a bit sideways when she refused to spit in Jesse’s face, but luckily he had his tongue scraper handy — and a seven minute response time by the police was cutting it close. TC knew of a way to buy more time, which involved him entering a petting zoo pantsless and stealing a goat, and Jody took it upon himself to eradicate all of Sabina’s men. In the end, Marie got her fill of souls, including Sabina’s direct from the source, but she was still intent on making Jesse pay his debt with Tulip’s soul.
We still don’t exactly know what this huge debt is. It seemed originally that it had to do with the souls Jesse lost when he bolted from Angelville. But now that Marie is up and about again, we left to ponder just what exactly it is she wants from him. Whatever it is, he has promised Marie she will get what he owes her as long as Tulip stays alive, her own soul intact. Sabina wasn’t so lucky however, Jesse putting a bullet in her to spare her from being tossed into The Tombs.
But whatever it is that Marie wants will require Jesse to contact Herr Starr — which most likely means Marie wants the Genesis power. Jesse might be just a bit too late though as Starr had an unexpected visit from All Father who is anxious now to present Humperdoo as the Messiah … and unleash the Apocalypse.
Cassidy has been spending most of his time moping around in New Orleans, but after he was kidnapped by Les Enfants du Sang, he found a whole new world opening up to him. But it was one he didn’t want. These people want to be vampires and he’s not willing to turn them because it’s just boring, and all the people you know and love grow old and die, leaving you alone again and again. What kind of afterlife is that?
The group’s leader Eccarius, a sort of riff on the Vampire Lestat, suggests to Cassidy that maybe he’s just doing it all wrong and takes him for a flight around New Orleans. Cassidy had no idea he could fly. But Cass tries to show Eccarius that he has a way with the women and then fails miserably. Eccarius then shows him how a vampire can control someone’s will, bringing the woman, and her date (or was it her father) to him for some heavy making out. When he released them, they thought Cassidy had done something to them because Eccarius had vanished. Not really, he just turned into a cute black cat. Maybe this vampire stuff wasn’t as bad as Cass thought … but he still truly misses Tulip (and maybe Jesse too).
Holing himself up in a crack house, Cass gets a call from Tulip that is nothing but very awkward small talk, but she promises him that once they break the curse and get out of Angelville, they’ll find Cass and hit the road again. I know she’s trying to cheer him up, but Cass doesn’t want to be their third wheel anymore. So after the call, he picks himself up and heads back to his new friends. Will Cassidy finally embrace what it means to be a vampire?
