So when are we going to get a glimpse of life after Hell for Eugene and Hitler? Not this week.
Nope. This week is more family drama for Jesse and his Gran’ma, aka Madame L’Angelle, and we’re beginning to learn that she’s not someone you want to mess with. In a flashback, young Jesse was getting customers for his Gran’ma but it always came with a caveat: don’t miss a payment. A high school teacher found out the hard way that Madame L’Angelle does not extend credit. And the interest she collects is … your soul. Yes, now we know what she meant when, in the first episode, she instructed TC to connect Jesse’s mother to the machine. It’s her own little gizmo that apparently extracts the soul from the unfortunate person who crosses her, and it seems that soul is transferred to her in some way which apparently has kept her alive all these years. The question now is just how old is Gran’ma? (The comics source material has suggested she may be pushing 300.)
Jesse, however, made a terrible mistake bringing Tulip back to Angelville to be resurrected from the dead because now he’s basically trapped there. Gran’ma Marie is not about to let him get away now, and if he does she’ll surely send TC and Jody after him. Jesse staying put is all kinds of okay with Cassidy because he’s ready to hit the road with Tulip, but is love for her appears to be unrequited. Since she’s been back, Tulip has not shown Cassidy one ounce of affection, nevertheless he persists. And Jesse is doing all he can to get rid of Cassidy but neither of them is making a move without Tulip.
There are other problems to deal with as well. Jesse believes the only way he can get out of Angelville is to get back Genesis back so he can take out Marie and her henchmen. And to do that he has to contact Herr Starr who has that little piece of Jesse’s soul that he needs to make Genesis work. Little did he know that Starr’s henchmen Lara and F.J. were hanging around the swamp to file reports to Starr, but Tulip found Lara while she was doing a little target practice.
With all the players in place, the message was given to Starr that Jesse was ready to become the Messiah, and not a moment too soon because Starr’s boss is ready to roll out the imbecile Humperdoo as the new Messiah. But Jesse has a plan. Once he gets his soul — and Genesis — back, they’ll kill Starr and his people as well as Marie and hers and start life anew. But Starr isn’t as dumb as Jesse thinks, handing him a sort of soul placebo. He’s not giving Jesse what he wants until he has Jesse where he wants him. But Tulip thought Jesse got his soul back and started shooting up the place (after remembering her vision of Dog/God telling her to “get those sonsabitches”), leaving them all in the lurch and Starr, Lara and F.J. outta there.
Still stuck in Angelville, Marie reminds Jesse that he owes her a whole lot of souls (apparently those he didn’t collect back when he was just a kid). And if he fails to deliver, Marie just might end up taking the one Jesse cares for the most … Tulip’s. The end of the episode found Jesse going to a place called The Tombs. While mopping the floor, a figure walked out of the shadows, chained around the neck (and probably to a wall), asking for help. Jesse said he couldn’t help and continued mopping.
So what’s in store for Jesse at The Tombs? Will Starr have to accept Humperdoo as the Messiah? And when will we catch up with Eugene?
