Dynasty :: But a Drug Scandal?

Let’s Talk About ‘But a Drug Scandal?’:

  • Directed by Elizabeth Gillies.
  • Liam is being cagey about allowing Fallon to read his new book.
  • Cristal and Dominique are suddenly BFFs, and Cristal is concerned when Dom tells her about some threatening messages she’s been getting.
  • Fallon is going all in on saving the Heroic Hooves charity, but she may have a new nemesis standing in her way.
  • Alexis isn’t sure Adam is being honest about his new youth serum but he assures her everything is above board. The FDA may have something to say about that.
  • Liam tries to get advice from Sam about his stolen book by using a metaphor of a tuna melt.
  • HSN assigns a bodyguard to Dom, who she just sees as an inconvenience.
  • Fallon and Sam try to come up with unique fundraiser ideas but are stuck until a fresh out of the pool, glistening Liam walks through the room in slow motion.
  • Kirby and Amanda must be on vacation again, and they took the surrogate with them.
  • Another week with zero mention of Ben and his vendetta against Blake. Did they squash their beef during the six months we didn’t see? Did he just get dropped because of the show’s cancellation and we’re supposed to forget he briefly existed?

Ah, Dynasty, back to your old, goofy self. But with only three episodes left (which won’t begin airing for another three weeks … GAH!), you better start wrapping up those storylines. We know from Adam Huber’s Instagram account that the show just wrapped production last week so they definitely had time to write a proper series finale, so there better be no cliffhangers (since time jumps are common on this show, maybe they’ll give us a look at the Carringtons 20 years in the future at the end). I doubt there will be a reunion movie like the original series had that quickly glossed over the series finale cliffhanger.

This week had several storylines rolling around. There seems to have not been much of a time jump since the last episode as Liam is still grappling with his conscience over the book that fell into his lap when his mentor dropped dead at the premiere party. Does he turn it in as his own work since no one else, allegedly, knows it exists, or does he just keep trying to finish his own book? He won’t let Fallon read it and he can’t tell her the truth, so he decides to confide in Sam, using the allusion of a tuna melt sandwich. A rival hotel has a tuna melt that all of Atlanta raves about, and Sam doesn’t know how to compete. Liam asks if Sam somehow got the recipe, would he steal it and put it on La Mirage’s menu? Sam is very confused as to why Liam is so focuse on this tuna melt but he eventually tells him that he would hire a new chef who could come up with his own recipe to out-do the competition. Probably not the answer Liam wanted because he was obviously seeking validation to steal the book. He eventually does tell Sam that his mentor and he completed a book, and then he says he really didn’t collaborate at all and Sam finally understands the tuna melt metaphor. He advises Liam against submitting the manuscript, even if he did make a few edits and rewrites, but when Fallon tells him she did read a few chapters, Liam had no choice but to submit the book to his publisher. Will there be any fallout? Only time, and the next three episodes, will tell.

Meanwhile Fallon has her hands full with Heroic Hooves, which is in danger of going under now that Patti de Vilbis is out of the picture. It seems she was the only person keeping the charity afloat with an annual donation and now that she’s cut off from her family’s money there is no funding. Fallon wants to rectify that, first asking Jeff for a donations, and then assuring a woman named Mandy that she will pick up Patti’s slack. Mandy tells Fallon that a charity is not meant to be funded by one person, but the charity has a fundraiser luncheon coming up. Fallon assures Mandy that she will triple the donations of the previous year and if she doesn’t she will step aside. As it seems Mandy already doesn’t approve of Fallon or her methods — especially when she figures out Fallon had something to do with Patti’s downfall — making a promise to leave the organization probably wasn’t her best call. But consulting with Sam, all they can come up with are the usual charity events and Fallon wants something new and exciting. On cue, Liam enters the room, fresh out of the pool, still glistening, drawing the attention of Sam and Fallon as he walks past them in slow motion. When they both pick their jaws up off the floor, Fallon has the event — bachelor auction (although Sam’s simultaneous idea was male escorts).

Getting wind of the ‘scandalous’ and almost ‘pornographic’ event Fallon has planned, Mandy tells her she cannot use their usual clubhouse for the event. Luckily she has Sam and he lets her use the Sahara Club. The only problem is finding hot bachelors to be auctioned off, and she suggests Sam round up the gays at the gym. Sam is offended at the stereotype and she apologizes but then he admits he can’t find anyone because they’re all at the gym. An audition for bachelors does not go well as the one person they see is a skinny science nerd (talk about stereotypes!), so Fallon presses Sam, Culhane and Liam into action (clearing Culhane’s participation with Nina first). An attempt at choreographing an opening dance routine with the three men goes terribly awry, but in the end they manage to pull it off, ridiculous as it was (but the actors looked like they were having fun). But Fallon soon learned she had a tough room full of Mandy’s friends who didn’t laugh at any of her jokes, and even worse, wouldn’t place a bid on a bachelor (one inebriated woman did offer $2000 for the nerd). Fallon noticed that Mandy was preventing people from bidding, as did Jeff, and when Fallon went to confront her Jeff jumped up on stage and made an offer no one could refuse — a full week on his private island, flown there on his private jet with the date of their choice. Let the bidding begin! Fallon thanked Jeff for the assist and he told her that he was impressed with how she stood up to Mandy without causing a scene … and in that instant a slightly tipsy Liam took to the stage to auction himself off. Before anyone else could bid Fallon yelled one million dollars to put an end to that. With the auction a success, Fallon was feeling vindicated but Mandy seemed to be feeling vindictive, so Fallon may have more opposition to come.

Meanwhile, Alexis checks up on Adam and his new youth serum — the one he gave surrogate Stacey after dosing her with mushrooms in order to get his job back at the hospital — concerned that he might not have done everything on the up and up. He assures her everything was perfectly legal and she has no worries. That’s good because there have been reports of health issues related to the serum. Adam brushes them off as routine complaints after an injection, but Alexis says it’s more serious than that, it has caused heart issues in some of the patients (uh oh, how will this affect Stacey and the baby?). And the FDA has come to collect samples to see what’s in it. Adam again assures her she has nothing to worry about … but he’s lying. He quickly makes his way to see Blake at the manor — interrupting a game of chess with himself — and explains the situation. Blake isn’t happy that Adam used Blake’s FDA contact without his knowledge but he will do what he can to help. All Adam needs to do is produce some clean samples without the illegally imported ingredient in it, and Blake will take care of the rest. And he has two hours to do it because that’s when the tests will start on his serum. At the facility, an emergency has everyone vacate the building. A security guard approaches the car and Adam is fearful they are about to be detained. Turns out its a buddy of Blake’s who helped stage the event and they have six minutes to get in and out. All it cost Blake was one of Mrs. Gunnerson’s strawberry rhubarb pies.

While they are planting clean samples, Dex had been concerned that Adam was not being honest with Alexis and offered to have one of his own contacts conduct tests on the samples. Alexis told him she trusted Adam, but Dex wasn’t so sure and called his friend who came to collect the samples. A furious Alexis felt that Dex was undermining her and treating her like an idiot, and he was only worried about any scandal with her company affecting him (which it would). She rips the samples out of the woman’s hand (why was she dressed in full lab gear to collect the samples?) and makes it known to Dex that he has seriously over-stepped his bounds. But … Alexis cools down and realizes that having Dex get the tests done was a good thing so she agrees to it. Blake and Adam get the good news that the samples at the FDA are clean — no surprise — but Adam now has to find an alternate to the illegal ingredient if he’s going to continue producing the serum. Not so fast as Alexis marches into Blake’s study with the news that she had her own tests done and learned that Adam was in fact lying to her. She also had some federal agents with her who cuffed Adam and took him away, with Blake not sure there was anything he could do for his son at this point.

Somehow over the last six months, Cristal and Dominique have become besties and things are going great for Dom’s business after winning the NordicStar contract. But her fame has come with a price — she has a stalker of sorts, someone has been sending her threatening emails which are enough of a concern to FSN that they are assigning her a bodyguard. Dom is against the idea but Cristal believes she should take the threats seriously. When the boydguard shows up, Dom finds his methods very intrusive and she’s appalled when he punches her assistant in the throat as she ‘sneaks up’ on them … with a cup of coffee. Dom wants him to dial it down a little but that’s not his method of operation. He will be with her 24/7 whether she wants him there or not. Later when Cristal and Dom plan to attend Fallon’s fundraiser — Dom is all ready to bid on some hot bachelor — the bodyguard doesn’t think she should be in a room full of people and if she insists on going, he will be there too. Dom sees this as an easy way to kill the fun of the evening, so when he arrives to take her to the event, she’s suddenly got a cold and can’t get out of bed. She accuses him of making her sick. He says he doesn’t have a cold and she says that’s because he gave it to her, so she’s not getting out of bed, she’s just going to watch The Real Housewives, and he can go home. He reluctantly leaves and out of nowhere Cristal pops up from behind Dom’s pillows. Now all they have to do is sneak down the fire escape out back because Dom is sure the bodyguard is the type to just sit outside the building in his car.

They get to the party but before Dom can place a single bid the bodyguard shows up because he went back in to check up on her and she was gone. An upset Dom has had her night ruined so she storms out and goes home but when she gets there it looks like the place has been ransacked. Dom doesn’t see a figure behind the door and as Dom steps further into the room, the Black Hood dashes out before Dom can do anything. Not long after, the bodyguard reveals to her that the emails were coming from a woman in Florida, the designer who lost the NordicStar contract to Dom. While it was obvious to all of us that’s who it had to be, it took that moment for the lightbulb to go off over Dom’s head. But if she’s in Florida, according to the IP address on the emails, then who was in her home? That is unknown at this popint, but Dom now realizes she does need the bodyguard … and maybe he needs her too … as the settle in for the night for a Real Housewives marathon.

No episode for three weeks now, so who knows how much time will have passed. I expect Fallon’s kid to be in college.
