Dynasty :: Is the Next Surgery On the House?

Well well well, the writers for this week’s episode of Dynasty are getting the storytelling back on track. Oh, that’s not to say that there wasn’t some ridiculously goofy moments, but for the most part we got some movement on the main storylines.

The main thrust of this week’s episode is the redevelopment of the triangle between Blake, Cristal and Fallon. Cristal wants to atone for her sins — planning to kill Alexis and nearly killing her brother instead — so she wants the Carrington charitable foundation to set up something with the local church to help veterans. Blake is on board and they set up a meeting with Blake’s priest friend but then he bails on Cristal at the last minute because … Fallon entices him to join her in a scheme to expose what a terrible mother Heidi is, with the added benefit of repairing the rift between father and daughter. Blake, who claims he is trying to walk the straight and narrow, jumps at the chance for some skullduggery with Fallon and that does not sit well with Cristal. She’s fine with him wanting to rebuild that relationship, but not at the expense of a project the two of them are supposed to be working on.

Somehow, Blake and Anders found out where Heidi went after the disappeared — to Arizona?! And apparently to some ranch that was also … dun dun duuuun … a pot farm. But, it wasn’t, that was the property adjacent to the women’s retreat she visited for some reason that wasn’t really made clear but the point was the instructor told Fallon that the entire time Heidi was there, she was on the phone the whole time trying to call her son. So, turns out she’s not such a terrible mom after all, and any chance Fallon hoped for to paint her as such in a child custody battle flew out the window. But she, and surprisingly Liam, we determined to get shared custody of Connor. A meeting with Liam’s mother to try and reverse the custody rights they all signed away was fruitless.

Until … Fallon cooked up a plan to frame Heidi as a car thief. Offering to take Heidi on a ‘mom’s night out’ before she and Connor returned to California, Fallon ‘forgot’ her phone as they were leaving La Mirage and asked Heidi to drive the car around to the back entrance because it was closer to the elevators. The valet (a disguised Blake) brought the car around and Heidi drove off only to discover there was no back entrance. Pulled over for driving a stolen car, Heidi realized she was being set up. And that suspicion bore out when Fallon rescued her (‘the Carrington name still has some pull in this town’), but it was even more shocking when Liam admitted he was also in on the plot. Then Heidi dropped a bomb — Connor is not Liam’s son. She refused to say who the father was at first but fearing this custody battle would drag on she finally revealed that Liam’s father was Connor’s father. Connor is Liam’s brother, not son. Back to confront Mrs. Van Kirk, she admitted to the ruse because she didn’t want anyone knowing about her husband’s affair. Fallon was finally victorious in proving what a lying, conniving bitch Liam’s mother is and he has basically cut her out of his life, going so far as to disinvite her from the wedding.

On the other side of things, Jeff’s condition is worsening as his liver is failing and he only has days to live. There are no immediate matches within Jeff’s family (so we didn’t see Monica, Dominique or Vanessa at all this week), not even Blake. Oh, but there was one match — Adam. Alexis assumed that would be Jeff’s salvation but there’s a catch — Adam is a past liver donor and it’s dangerous to donate twice. Adam could die. But his other choice is going to jail because if Jeff dies, that confession video Adam made about poisoning Jeff will be released. Now, just a little medical aside here because I needed to know if the double donor thing was true — it is, sort of. But not quite for the reason the writers cooked up for Adam. Yes, it’s major surgery but the problem isn’t that Adam could die, it’s just that a regenerated liver is functional and has the same mass as the original, it just doesn’t have the same structure as the original so the regrown tissue actually would not do the recipient any good. But after a silly bit of slapstick in trying to steal a recently deceased patient’s liver (against the wishes of the wife who said their religion forbid any type of life-saving donations — umm, what kind of religion forbids giving someone life after you’re dead???), Adam tells Alexis that he has decided to undergo the procedure to save Jeff.

And then there was some more nonsense at La Mirage. Sam gave Kirby a try-out as an event planner for some party for the Atlantix team. During the walk-through with Culhane and someone else from the team, Sam is distracted by a commotion in the lobby as some guy is yelling at security that he knows the owner. Turns out it’s an old acquaintance of Sam’s, Ramy. Who you may ask? Well, even the flashback to Season 1, Episode 4 was not real help in identifying this character (and IMDB is of even less help as they identify the character as Crockett). Going back to our recap of that episode, it seems this is the guy who helped Sam steal a cell phone that contained a sex video of OG Cristal and Matthew Blaisdell. So, yeah, that’s how unimportant this character is to the point that he’s been renamed … unless is name is Ramy Crockett? But he’s fresh out of prison for that crime (it was a set-up but he didn’t name Sam as his accomplice) and needs a place to stay, so of course he shows up on Sam’s doorstep. And then promptly steals the Rolex of the Atlantix guy. A search of Ramy’s room found nothing but Sam surprised Ramy when he returned to his room, sitting there, Roex in hand. Ramy hid it in the curtain rod, one of Sam’s old tricks. But Ramy played on Sam’s good nature and Sam decided to give him a second chance, making up a story to Culhane that the watch was found in an elevator, and not telling Kirby anything … except that she’s got the job permanently as the event coordinator (thanks to Culhane telling Sam that she actually did a great job with the party). But Ramy is sure to cause more trouble for Sam.

And that brings us to the week’s cliffhangers. Cristal is determined to get this charity thing going with or without Blake’s help because she needs to cleanse her soul. And it turns out the guy she insulted when she was looking for the priest earlier is the new priest. Which confused her because he was definitely flirting with her, but after she insisted on a makeshift confession in the room of a patient at the hospital who just received last rites (and Cristal was at the hospital to ask Adam for help but he was too distracted trying to steal that liver), the new priest said he would join her cause … for the veterans, but he still gives off a vibe that it’s not just vets he’s interested in.

And Mrs. Van Kirk shows up at Carrington Manor to make Blake an offer. She wants her son back and she wants to enlist Blake in helping break Liam and Fallon apart. It’s obvious Blake doesn’t really like his soon-to-be-in-law, and she has no intention of having any connection to the Carringtons. But … she’s the controlling vote on the board to sell Carrington Atlantic to Jeff. If Blake goes along with her plan, he gets his old company back.

Will Blake betray Fallon right after they’ve repaired their relationship? We may, or may not, find out this season which was not able to complete filming before COVID-19 shut Hollywood down. For now it looks like there are only two episodes left instead of the expected six so we may all be left hanging for a while.
