Wow, this was a head-spinning episode of Dynasty with just about every core member of the cast having some major bit of storyline to grab on to. Alexis was really the only bit of dead weight this week trying to push that painting of her dog off on a charity auction for Steven’s foundation. At least there was a funny punchline to that, but come on, the painting wasn’t THAT bad!
So where to start? Well, Cristal is pregnant. She’s afraid to tell Blake because there’s so much going on at the moment with his other kids. She not even sure she wants to keep the baby and only confides in Sam after he delivers his own bombshell news to her. But at the gala for Steven’s foundation, she nearly collapses, dropping her purse which conveniently had the positive pregnancy test in it. Blake picked up the purse, saw the stick and appeared to storm off. Cristal recovered, and the next thing you know Blake is giving a toast to the new addition to the family. Whew! Oh, but there is a twist … Cristal is later texting with someone, M Jennings, who is asking if the baby is his! She begins to reply that she doesn’t know, but decides to reply that it’s definitely Blake’s. Uh oh. So does this mean Jennings is not really Cristal 2.0’s maiden name? Come on Dynasty writers … don’t screw this up like you did with the first Cristal! We can’t take a third Cristal if you get another season!
Poor Sam, as Steven’s spouse, is being tasked with hosting Steven’s charity gala, luckily with Anders actually attending to all the specifics. All Sam has to do is be a host and give a brief speech. Which may be easier said than done after Sam receives a package full of divorce documents! And Steven is not answering his phone or returning Sam’s calls because he’s off on some spiritual expedition in Paraguay to find himself … or as Blake puts it he’s on a drug-fuelled bender. At the gala, a friend of Sam and Steven is there alone having recently broken up with his partner. Next thing you know, a very emotionally vulnerable Sam and this guy are making out hot and heavy in Blake’s study when … Fallon walks in. Distraught from her own drama, she storms out and when Sam goes after her to explain, she slaps him across the face and yells in front of everyone to not cheat on her brother. Ouch.
In the aftermath of Michael’s accident that left Jeff seriously injured (not to mention the gunshot wound sustained when he showed up at the delivery point between Ada’s ‘goods’ and Liam’s company), Jeff wakes up in a room that looks like a hospital but is really a room at the Carrington manor. Neither he nor his sister are thrilled with the accommodations, but Blake and Michael insist that he would have woken up in a prison hospital if Blake hadn’t intervened. Because … family. Oh, and Blake needs Jeff to pump $10 million into his bid for the soccer team for Cristal. Because … family!
Jeff finally agrees to help with a lot of conditions built in, but his biggest goal is to take down Michael Culhane by any means necessary. Fallon insists that she knows everything and she goes through a convoluted plan to buy off the guy from Liam’s company so he won’t mention Culhane’s name when he’s questioned by the FBI. The guy won’t bite at first, so Fallon and Michael pay a visit to … Liam! He’s not happy, but once Fallon and Michael reveal how Uncle Max wanted to have sex with her in order to close the deal for Carrington Atlantic, and how Fallon paid an escort who gave Uncle Max the heart attack which led to Ada swooping in and dragging Michael into her scheme, Liam was on board to find documents to prove their case. Except they all appear to have been professionally doctored and not of much help. But two can play at that game so Fallon returns to sway the witness one more time — with the real doctored documents or the newly doctored documents that could put him in federal prison for a very long time.
Naturally the guy takes Fallon’s deal and agrees not to say the name Michael Culhane and all is well with the world. Okay, this is Dynasty so it ain’t that simple. Jeff twists the knife a little deeper when he reveals to Fallon that Michael kept working for Ada even after he told her that he was done. Jeff was quite pleased with himself. That news led to Fallon breaking off the engagement with Michael, saying she may forgive him one day but she’ll never be able to trust him. She also finally realized that she did make a huge mistake by choosing Michael over Liam so she goes back to Liam’s apartment and is greeted by a wet blonde bimbo (sorry, but she really didn’t seem all that smart). She offered to give Liam a message but Fallon said she’d come back tomorrow. Nope, they were leaving for vacation early. Sigh … has Fallon lost Liam too?
Jeff, after having a near death experience and settling his long-standing grudge against Michael, decides he wants to reconnect with his mother. Sister Monica is definitely not on board with this because she seems to have a decidedly different take on their mother than he does, and is even more shocked when he calls her.
And then the bombshell. Sam’s phone rings in the middle of the night. On the other end is the voice of … Steven! And then we see Steven! Yes, James Mackay is back! Sam is of course upset about the divorce papers but Steven tells him to pretend he never saw them, that he never wanted a divorce, it was all because of his drug-induced spiritual journey. He promised he’d be home soon after he took care of a few things in Paraguay. Sam suggested he could come down and help and Steven hesitantly said sure, he’d call him over the weekend and make plans. But then Steven said to always remember that he loved him. Which sounded a bit ominous, if you ask me. Sam hangs up and the camera pulls back to reveal Steven in some fancy restaurant that definitely does not look like somewhere in Paraguay (New York, Paris … Atlanta?).
So is Steven really back or are they playing a cruel trick on us (and Mr. Mackay) by having something tragic happen to Steven after his ‘remember I’ll always love you’ line? And now we have to wonder if Cristal is married to this M Jennings guy, and if she was pregnant before she got to Atlanta, or she somehow snuck out and hooked up with her current or ex sometime since. She’s been there for months now, not days or weeks, so the latter seems the more probable answer but I hope the show doesn’t go there. We need Blake and Cristal to be solid, not spend the rest of the season squabbling. And who will they cast as Mama Colby / Blake’s half-sister? The second half of the season stared off with a bang so I hope the writers can keep up this momentum.
