So this week marks the 100th episode of American Horror Story, and as expected this episode did flip the script a bit just like ‘Roanoke’ did with its sixth episode. So much so that the season really needs to change its name because there’s been a five-year time jump! Welcome to 1989.
And a lot has changed since the massacre at Camp Redwood. Richard and Benjamin … and writing that out I just realized there is an actor named Richard Benjamin who starring in Love at First Bite and Saturday the 14th, so coincidence? … have been carrying out a reign of terror in Los Angeles in 1985, well, Richard has. Poor Benjamin has just been forced to watch and he wants out. But the Dark Lord isn’t about to have that but Ben does find a sort of escape clause — a newspaper with Richard’s face plastered on the front page. Helpfully pointing that out to some locals in the neighborhood, they take action and Richard ends up on Death Row while Ben tries to move on with his life. He ends up in Alaska with a wife and baby, working at a video store under the name Donald. And all is right with his world.
Margaret has ditched God and become an Ivana Trump-inspired real estate mogul, buying up properties with horrific histories like the Manson Family ranch and Lizzie Borden’s house. And, surprise, she’s now married to … Trevor! He didn’t die, the knife just missed his heart. At this point, Brooke is in prison, framed for the murders at Camp Redwood and sitting on Death Row herself. Trevor makes Margaret think he believes Brooke stabbed him, but he knows the truth and tries to blackmail Margaret, who turns around and blackmails him, forcing him to marry her if he wants any of her money. Oh, and by being married, he can’t be forced to testify against her.
Back at Camp Redwood, Montana and Xavier are enjoying the freedom that being a ghost gives them, randomly killing anyone who wanders into camp. Ray, however, has had enough of their shenanigans, but news of new killings at the camp gets Margaret’s attention (and a big ‘welcome back’ to Leslie Jordan, who showed up this week as Margaret’s mullet-wearing assistant Courtney). With several real estate deals having fallen through due to the community’s disgust at the macabre nature of it all, the new killings give Margaret an idea — re-open Camp Redwood as a tourist experience and kick it all off with a major concert featuring the likes of Billy Idol, Kajagoogoo, Rick Springfield and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. But inviting hundreds of unsuspecting visitors to a campground filled with bloodthirsty spirits of the past (but not the ghosts of the 1970 counselors who don’t even want to touch a human anymore) may not be such a great idea. And one spirit in particular, Chet, is anxious to give Margaret the payback she deserves.
In prison, Brooke finds herself in the cell next to Richard and he’s trying to make her an offer, a deal with the Devil for immortality because she has potential (even though the only person she actually killed was Montana, and that was self-defense). But Brooke turns him down, several times, and is ready to accept her fate: death by lethal injection. Richard is disappointed he can’t lure Brooke in but he still performs a ceremony to assure his master that if he lets Richard live, he will deliver a flood of souls to the rivers of Hell. And Satan accepts the offer, possessing a guard who helps Richard escape so he can raise Hell at the Camp Redwood concert. Brooke, however, is going to die and she knows Margaret is in the gallery watching. The execution is uneventful, with Margaret suggesting she’s pay good money to see a guillotine execution, and Brooke’s body is brought back to the morgue. Of course, there was always something a little suspicious about the masked executioner and the mystery person injects Brooke with something else that wakes her up. The executioner removes the hood and is revealed to be Donna (I was wondering where she’d gone).
Benjamin gets home from work with an advance copy of Who Framed Roger Rabbit to watch with Lorraine and baby Bob, but instead he finds Lorraine dead and a note with the baby letting Ben know that vengeance is coming. He takes the baby to his sister-in-law’s and says he wants Bobby to know his dad loved him more than anything but he’ll never escape the darkness that continues to follow him and now he must put a stop to it once and for all. Donning his rain slicker and carrying a ring of keys, Mr. Jingles is reborn.
