Previously on American Horror Story: 1984, two killers stalked Camp Redwood, and the mysterious hiker was revealed to be … a ghost! Mr. Jingles brutally murdered Dr. Hopple, and Margaret used her religious seduction to soothe the savage beast and put Richard Ramirez on a path to righteousness … and to kill Mr. Jingles. But there are more twists this week.
When we last left our camp counselors, they were trapped in two different cabins with two killers pounding on each door. The cabin with Chet, Nurse Rita, Brooke and Ray was being threatened by Richard Ramirez (and Ray got pretty slashed up in the process but Chet saved him) and the cabin with Montana, Xavier and Trevor was under siege by Mr. Jingles … or so they thought. Turns out it was a bunch of juvenile delinquents dressed as Mr. Jingles ‘celebrating’ the night of the original murders, apparently a townie tradition. And then the real Mr. Jingles showed up and was not impressed with the impersonation, killing both boys while our campers made their escape. RIP Doofuses. The others also managed to get away from Ramirez and they were all hoping to make it to the rendezvous point, Rita’s car, in one piece.
Of course, as any good slasher film which requires people to run through the woods, they all got separated. Poor Chet and Ray ended up in a pit full of spikes, Chet taking the worst of it with a spike impaling his left shoulder. Ray knew if he moved Chet, he’d just bleed out so he decided to leave him and ‘go for help’, aka save his own ass and leave Chet to die. Apparently an idea not foreign to him. While he thought Chet was unconscious, Ray related a story of a fraternity Hell Night in which a new pledge tumbled down a staircase and died. To cover for himself and the frat house, Ray decided the best course of action was to ditch the body in a staged car accident, pushing the poor pledge’s car off a cliff. Except the guy wasn’t dead and Ray could not stop the already in motion vehicle, killing the guy again … or did he? All Ray knew is that the car was found and that’s why he’s at the camp. He’s just hiding out, and now it seems karma has come for him.
Brooke and Rita make it to the car and Brooke wants to leave to get help, but Rita is sort of guilt-tripping her about leaving her friends. She finally gives Brooke the keys and … a needle to the neck, partially paralyzing Brooke. Wait what? Rita says she thinks it was horse tranquilizers but she’s not a nurse so she’s not sure. And in another flashback we learn Rita is not Rita. She’s a psychologist who met with Dr. Hopple to discuss talking with Mr. Jingles. He hasn’t spoken since he was brought to the hospital but she has a lengthy resumé with other serial killers that impresses Hopple so she agrees.
Rita, or Miss Chambers, doesn’t seem like she’ll get much out of Mr. Jingles, Benjamin Richter, but she is persuasive with her words and he actually speaks to her, telling her she is the first person who has actually ‘seen’ him in the past 14 years. She seems to understand that he wasn’t born evil, his experiences in Vietnam changed him and made him who he is now and she is convinced she can make him the person he used to be … but the only way to do that is to get him out of the facility and back to Camp Redwood to carry out her experiment. So it was Miss Chambers who concocted the plan that Benjamin used to escape. And she also abducted the real Nurse Rita and tied her up in the boat house where she was found by Montana, Trevor and Xavier. And Mr. Jingles found her too, shoving a broken oar down her throat while the others made their escape. RIP Nurse Rita.
In an interesting moment, Mr. Jingles actually showed some mercy on another of the boys that was dressed as him. The boy thought it was his ‘friends’ … and they weren’t really his friends but he was happy they let him tag along even though he was decidedly the misfit of the group, overweight, asthmatic and with a twisted urethra … and learning all that as the kid spoke to him seemed to resonate and he let the kid live. But … Xavier and Trevor had stumbled upon Chet and his situation and heard Mr. Jingle coming. As the killer stood at the edge of the pit, Trevor ran at him and knocked him into the pit, impaling him on the spikes. Yeah, it wasn’t Mr. Jingles, it was the poor kid who got a little mercy from the serial killer. Oops. RIP Wide Load. But they did manage to get Chet off of the spike and out of the pit. Now getting him to the car without him screaming like a stuck pig and alerting all of Camp Redwood’s killers to there whereabouts was going to be a challenge.
With Miss Chambers having dragged Brooke off to perhaps be bait for Mr. Jingles, or a sacrifical lamb, Montana and Ray get to the car and see that someone has been dragged away. Trevor had given Ray the keys to his motorbike but Montana didn’t want to leave everyone behind. Before she knew it, Ray was speeding down the driveway … and right into Mr. Jingles’ path, quickly having his head severed from his body by a machete. RIP Ray. But Montana was left alone by the car and Richard showed up ready to kill. Montana turned on her female charms to hopefully change Richard’s mind with a little sexual stimulation, and when she broke off the kiss she said to him, ‘Why the hell haven’t you killed her yet?’ Wait what?! So what is Montana’s beef with Brooke? And who will get to her first? Mr. Jingles or The Night Stalker?
There are sure to be more twists and turns to come!
