- Synopsis: Weekly American television newsmagazine/reality legal show.
- Network: NBC
- Broadcast History: Thirty seasons
- Trivia: Previously the network’s flagship newsmagazine, but now focuses mainly on true crime stories. The show has been used to fill time slots after the cancellation of a program. The show aired its first docuseries, ‘The Widower’, in February 2021. By mid-1999, the program aired five nights a week but by 2001 editions were removed from the schedule due to viewer exhaustion and the rise of popular and less costly reality shows. The original Tuesday edition was eliminated in 2004. To capitalize on the show’s popularity, NBC began packaging reruns for CNBC and MSNBC. The show originally used the same set as NBC Nightly News, but when the Today show moved to a new studio in 1994, Dateline moved into that space and got a new set. General Motors sued NBC over a Dateline report that was found to have faked footage of Chevrolet pickup trucks exploding on impact. Chris Hansen hosted a series of special reports under the titles ‘To Catch a Predator’, ‘Wild Wild Web’ and ‘To Catch a Con Man’. Richard Engel hosted ‘The Real Blacklist’ whcih was used as a tie-in to the scripted drama The Blacklist.
