Skelton famously disliked writers, wanting to write for his characters himself. Sherwood Schwartz had it in his contract that Skelton could not discuss a show’s script before it was presented to him prior to taping, leaving Skelton unaware of the situation or character he was playing in each scene, causing him to often break the fourth wall and say to the audience, ‘Don’t blame me, folks, I don’t write this stuff.’ The show won three Emmy Awards during its run.

Silvers co-star Maurice Gosfield provided the voice of Benny the Ball, and the character’s design was based on Gosfield. The title was changed to Boss Cat in the UK to avoid confusion with a popular cat food named Top Cat, but the show’s theme song mentioning Top Cat several times was not altered, making the title change irrelevant.
