It’s Premiere Week, and there are a lot of notable, forgotten and infamous shows that premiered this week over the decades — drama, comedy, variety, animated, reality, talk … you name it, it probably premiered this week. And in the early decades of this particular week, many of teh scripted series stocked up on guest stars galore.   • Trivia: CBS was so desperate to get Van Dyke back on TV that they signed him to a three year contract. Van Dyke had moved to Arizona and did not want to return to Los Angeles so the series was filmed in Carefree, Arizona for the first two seasons. Ratings were so bad for Season 2 that CBS wanted to cancel the series but couldn’t, so it was retooled and moved to Hollywood for the third and final season. CBS refused to air an episode in which the daughter of Van Dyke’s and Lange’s characters walks in on them having sex (off camera). Show creator Carl Reiner was so angry he refused to work on the show beyond the third season, and vowed to never work in television again particularly with CBS (which was allowing more controversial topics on All in the Family). Van Dyke didn’t like working back in Hollywood and wanted to return to Arizona, and did not want to continue the show without Reiner. He opted to not renew his contract and the show was cancelled. The unaired episode did play in syndication.

The show was eventually held liable for $25 million to be paid to Amedure’s family, but the decision was overturned by an appellate court which ruled the producers were not responsible for the actions of their guests after taping. The incident, and other objectionable topics, led the show to be removed from some stations, causing ratings to drop and ending the show in 2003.
