Chapelwaite :: The Prophet

EPIX

Things are taking a drastic turn in Preacher’s Corner as Rebecca’s claims about Phillip Boone still being alive and stalking the streets of town are met with scepticism, but she doubles down when she reveals Stephen Boone is also still alive. Rebecca’s mother still thinks her daughter’s time at Chapelwaite has affected her thinking, and perhaps her feelings for Charles and the children are a factor as well … but Mrs. Morgan seems to actually know more than she’s letting on (at least that’s how the actress is playing it, never seeming sincere at all when trying to pooh-pooh her daughter’s notions of the dead being alive). But after the apple girl mentions the name Jacob during their visit to Chapelwaite the night before, Rebecca remembers seeing the name in her father’s letters to the Boones (to say Charles was shocked that Rebecca’s father was the Boones’ attorney is an understatement). While she re-reads the letters to see what she can deduce from her father’s knowledge and possible interaction with Jacob, Rebecca’s mother admits to her that when her husband went to New York and never returned, his second wife contacted her to see if they had reconciled. He never returned home from his trip which only opens up more questions about this Jacob person and the Boones.

Charles has decided to make the journey to Jerusalem’s Lot with Able as his guide. Able has been there to make delivery of wood planks, but he never entered the town and never collected any fees. With the two of them leaving Chapelwaite, Rebecca takes the children to her mother’s house, unaware that Loa found Rebecca’s manuscript, ‘The Curse of the Boones’. She tells her siblings that Rebecca is just using them, but they don’t believe her until she shows her older sister the writings. At the house, she brings this to Rebecca’s attention and she tries to assure Honor that the story is meant to be fiction, but she’s not buying it. They have a bigger problem on their hands as Loa has gone missing. She somehow made it back to Chapelwaite on foot — and she has one bad leg — to meet up again with Stephen. She told her father earlier that Stephen said he could heal her, but Charles warned that he was just manipulating the child. But now that she’s also feeling betrayed by Rebecca, Stephen seems to be the one person she can trust.

Also at the Morgan residence are Faith Pringle and her baby. Minister Burroughs comes for a visit after being confronted by his wife about the parentage of Felicity’s child. Even before she asks him point blank if it’s his, she tells him that even in the child’s condition she could still love it unconditionally. She’s still grieving over the loss of her own children, laying the blame squarely at her husband’s feet. Burroughs tells Faith that he admitted to his wife he is the father of her child, and she tells him they have to leave Preacher’s Corner now before Jacob’s people come for her and the baby, and him. He doesn’t want to leave without confessing his own sins to his congregation, but her sense of urgency convinces him to leave with her in the morning.

The constable is also beginning to take Rebecca’s claims seriously. After calling the doctor to examine his wife upon finding the puncture wounds in her neck — the doctor is surprised he didn’t see them before but the constable says they weren’t meant to be found — the constable locks his wife in a cell for her protection. Setting up in her bedroom with his gun at the ready for any nighttime intruders, he hears sounds coming from the area of the cell downstairs. Entering the room, he’s shocked to see Phillip Boone, his arm outstretched into the cell, the constable’s wife greedily feeding from his wrist. Phillip hisses that she belongs to him now, and flees before the constable can do anything.

Charles and Able arrive at Jerusalem’s Lot, but before they enter the town Charles asks Able to return home to look after his children. Able doesn’t want to leave him alone, but Charles insists so he makes the return while Charles enters the town and announces he’s there to see Jacob. He doesn’t get summoned until after the sunsets, and when he meets Jacob inside of a desecrated church, he’s taken aback by the horrific visage he’s confronted with. Jacob says he is known by many different descriptions including nosferatu, but from where he comes the term is just vampire. He tells Charles that all he wants from him is ‘the book’ that everyone keeps telling him to find. To Jacob, it is like his kind’s Bible and one of Charles’s ancestors stole it, hoping to harness its power but it’s not something meant for a human to control. The book is known as De Vermis Mysteriis, or Mysteries of the Worm, the ‘worm’ being the vampires’ god, a god that pre-dates God Himself. If Charles finds and returns the book to Jacob, the Boone family can live in peace. If not, his children, his grandchildren and their children for generations to come will suffer.

Charles finally relents after Jacob’s followers arrive with Able, threatening to feed on him, and tells Jacob he will return the book. Of course he has to find it first. Assuming it is somewhere at Chapelwaite, Charles makes the return journey home and along the way he comes upon a shocking discovery — Loa, lying on the road, apparently dead. It’s probably safe to assume that she isn’t dead, but undead.
