Snowpiercer :: Keep Hope Alive

TNT

Snowpiercer has launched its eleventh weather balloon and now they wait for the next link from Melanie. There’s just one problem — there is no link, and the news of links are the one thing keeping morale on the train from completely crashing. Wilford, of course, is hoping that there are no further connections to Melanie, making it easier for him to retake the train.

He’s also hoping an evening with Miss Audrey will help ease him back onto Snowpiercer because she’s still got to be loyal to him. Right? Layton, Zarah, Ruth and the others who are in on the plan are fearful that Miss Audrey’s not of the strongest mental state, especially when it comes to Wilford. She assures everyone that she’s a different person and loyal to them and herself. She won’t allow herself to be lured in by him again. She even has a mission: to swap out some wires in Big Alice’s engine so that Snowpiercer’s engine can hear the conversation. And she does make the attempt, but she only has enough time for Wilford to pour a couple of drinks to get the box opened and switch the wires. And it appears she is unable to do it. It also appears that Wilford detects there was some tampering with the box, but does he think it was Audrey, or maybe it was Alex fiddling around?

Wilford getting any suspicions about Miss Audrey could turn extremely dangerous to the other parts of Layton’s plan, namely Josie playing spy in the sick bay. The Doctors Headwood have dipped Josie into a bathtub-sized vat of their bio-goop but her tissue damage is so severe there will still be other procedures, like skin grafts, that are necessary. But that will require Josie to be put to sleep for about an hour, not something she’s keen on doing. She’s already seen the doctors performing more procedures on Icy Bob, in what looked like an attempt at getting him to a point where he can breathe the frozen air, most likely outside of the train. Is Wilford planning to send him after Melanie if she’s survived at the weather station?

Josie has been sending notes to Layton through a network on both Snowpiercer and Big Alice, including the last two Aussies, Emilia and Murray, and little girl Winnie. Unfortunately, Terrence has taken notice of Winnie running through the Third Class car, suspecting she’s delivering messages to Layton. Terrence has also been displeased by Pike’s recent occupation on the train, distributing the weed he’s getting from Big Alice. Terrence sends LJ and Osweiller to deliver a message to both Pike and Layton by bashing Pike in the head with a pipe, giving him a pretty horrific gash that Layton staples together. Pike’s trade feeds the Tailies and he needs Terrence to back off, so Layton promises to take care of it. He offers Terrence a 60-40 split, but Terrence makes a veiled threat against Winnie, so the two are at an impasse, forcing Layton to ask Pike for a favor … kill Terrence.

Pike reluctantly goes to perform the deed, but he wants to make it fair, giving Terrence a weapon of his own. Terrence thinks he can get LJ and Osweiller to back him up but Layton has apparently gotten to them (perhaps there was a promise of returning them to some type of status above scrubbing floors). Pike and Terrence get into it, but Pike does get the upper hand and stabs Terrence to death. With his mission completed, it looks like something has snapped in Pike’s head as he shaves off his hair and beard, now looking like a lean, mean fighting machine instead of a crazy old man.

Josie gets one more message to Layton that something is about to go down, and it involves the Breachmen. Layton needs to keep the border open so Miss Audrey can return, but he also knows there is danger ahead. Till still believes the Breachmen are loyal to Wilford so they pay a visit to Boscovic and accuse him and his men again of working for Layton. He’s alone and is taken by surprise by the visit and accusation, again adamant that the Breachmen are not doing anything for Wilford. Instead, and unbeknownst to all of them at the time, someone (or more?) is running around the train murdering all of the Breachmen. The only figure we see is someone in a hoodie like Pike was wearing after he shaved his head. Is Pike Wilford’s operative? Are other Tailies involved?

As the murders are discovered and warning signals start ringing out on Snowpiercer, Wilford is escorting Miss Audrey back to the train. He feigns surprise that there seems to be a problem on Snowpiercer and tells Miss Audrey that she can stay with him on Big Alice. Ruth tries to get Miss Audrey to cross the border before the door closes, and Wilford invites her to board Big Alice as well. Surprisingly, Ruth turns down the offer, perhaps now well aware that Wilford is up to no good. But Miss Audrey remains on Big Alice as the door closes.

With an attack having taken place and no link from Melanie, Layton, Ruth and the engineers must do something to keep hope on Snowpiercer alive. And it’s Ruth who says they must lie, tell the passengers that they have connected to Melanie and that they are on their way to pick her up. If Layton was unsure of Ruth’s loyalties before, she seems to have proven where he priorities lie. She makes the announcement, everyone claps, but Layton, Zarah, Bennett, Javi and Ruth all know that this ruse may completely derail all of their efforts to fend off Wilford’s hostile takeover of Snowpiercer.

Snowpiercer airs Mondays at 9:00 PM on TNT.
