Love can certainly complicate a life, and several residents of Patience, Colorado are learning that the hard way on this week’s episode of Resident Alien.
Sheriff Thompson has no love life that we know of, devoted to his job and, apparently, his father who we meet this week (it’s Pop Tate from Riverdale!). But they certainly have a complicated relationship as it seems Mike moved his dad to Patience for his health. Dad doesn’t seem to be buying that excuse, implying that Mike is running from something, perhaps his own past. But life in Patience is trying Mike’s patience as nothing happens in town. He’s jealous of the murder rate in a bigger city nearby, and he’s disappointed that Patience apparently doesn’t have a serial killer because he can’t tie Sam’s death to the foot from the lake, meaning that Sam had to have committed suicide. Sam’s wife brings some files back to the office and suggests to Harry that a confirmation of murder would be better for her insurance claim. Harry doesn’t seem to take that as a red flag, but Sheriff Mike gets some good news from the toxicologist — Sam was poisoned, just as Harry said. He’s thrilled that Patience now has a murder on the books.
Asta is still wrestling with her feelings about Jay. She feels bad about lying to the girl and having her at the office under false pretenses, so Harry bluntly tells Asta to fire Jay. She actually has an out as Jay is just there to earn credit for school and school is almost finished. Asta thinks maybe she can make sure Jay gets a good grade so she’ll leave of her own accord. Harry says he’ll fire her. But things get complicated when Jay sees the doc’s files that were just dropped off, and discovers her birth certificate. She’s pissed that Asta lied to her, and she’s even less thrilled that ‘loser’ Jimmy is her father. Now Asta has to tell Jimmy what’s going on, and he’s not thrilled either, blaming Asta for this whole mess. Harry is just upset that he didn’t get to fire Jay before she walked out. But Jay makes her way to the diner her grandfather runs, and he tells her family eats free … and you can just see the cloud of anger lifting. Maybe he will be the key to bringing this family back together.
Harry’s life in infinitely more complicated than he expected with the arrival of human Harry’s wife Isabelle. In an opening flashback, we saw how the two met at an art gallery show where Harry bought Isabelle’s painting. But now five years later, the couple is apparently estranged, Harry disappearing from New York City before signing their divorce papers. Alien Harry quickly signs the papers and tells Isabelle there’s a hotel on the highway she can sleep at, but she’s not taking ‘get out’ for an answer. Instead, she spends the night, and curls up on the couch with Harry like a ‘big hot ham’. And he likes it. But he still drops not so subtle hints that she can go now. She doesn’t.
No, Isabelle ends up in town at D’Arcy’s bar and the two discuss the complicated men in their lives. D’Arcy even quips that it sounds like they’re involved with the same guy. Unfortunately, D’Arcy discovers they are when she decides to pay a surprise visit to Harry to once again throw herself at him. At least she’s got a bottle of champagne to console her. Isabelle continues to encroach on Harry’s life, breaking into the basement and the freezer, but she only found some stakes, not the body of her husband. And she gives Harry some ‘dessert’ after dinner which he finds extremely pleasurable. Which complicates things even further.
When Isabelle first arrived, Harry had Max and Sahar in duffel bags, preparing to dispose of the children so they’d no longer bother him. Max’s parents have already called the sheriff to report him missing but Max suddenly turns up in his bedroom closet. His parents think he just walked in there and fell asleep, and they bring him to Harry’s office so he can apologize to saying Harry is an alien. Harry sees this as his chance to prove that Max is losing his mind, laying out several pictures on his desk from which he asks Max to identify him. When Max can’t pick out Harry’s photo, that seals the deal. Harry recommends a facility in Georgia to ‘help’ Max with his delusions and his mom is ready to send him away. Sahar didn’t help Max’s cause when she said she couldn’t remember what had happened, making Max think she was just lying to cover her tracks.
But she honestly did not remember what had happened after touching the floating apple. But she still believes Max and she is not letting him go to Georgia. The two catch up with Harry at the diner to confront him but … they all begin to find some common ground after agreeing on a truce, leading Harry to ask the kids some questions and vice versa. In the end, it looks like Harry and Max have buried the hatchet and have a newfound admiration for each other, now able to share knowledge about their lives and their worlds. Who saw that coming? But as Harry gets deeper into humanity, what becomes of his mission? And where are the people looking for an alien? Will Max end up being the key to saving Harry from capture? We’ll have to stay tuned.
