Resident Alien :: Escape From New York

Syfy

Let’s Talk About ‘Escape From New York’:

  • We learn in the episode prologue that Goliath came to Earth 33 years ago, taking the human form of a Brazilian painter.
  • Violinda reveals the truth about Goliath to Asta while Harry has gone full alien in the middle of New York City — on Halloween — after his LSD trip.
  • Lisa Casper is hot on their trail, but who are the other two guys?
  • Kate returns home early, almost catches D’Arcy in the house, notices the coffee table has been moved an inch and is surprised by the wall hanging that she thought was in the closet.
  • Deputy Liv posts her UFO footage to YouTube but no one believes it’s real, ridiculing her in the comments.
  • Abigail Hodges has a yard sale but her behavior makes Mike second guess his arrest of her for her husband’s murder.
  • D’Arcy and Kate bond at the gym and over a couple of drinks, but Kate makes a surprising discovery.
  • Ben has to fire the town’s current doctor before she accidentally kills someone, and the only logical candidate to replace her is Harry, so what better way to offer him the job than to surprise Harry with a birthday party at his cabin when he returns from New York?

This week’s main story focused on Harry and Asta still in New York and still trying to find Goliath. But there were a few important things happening back in Patience as well.

In the previous episode, Ben told D’Arcy his secret of tracking Kate’s ovulation schedule so they didn’t get pregnant again. This week, Kate returned from her trip a bit early and nearly caught D’Arcy in the house, but she was able to sneak out through Max’s window. Later at the gym, D’Arcy had a panic attack about doing her leg workout, a bit of PTSD from the accident that nearly took her leg, and sees Kate on the treadmill. A little banter and some friendly competition leads to some bonding over a beer but … Kate’s beer tastes like soap, just like when she was pregnant with Max. Kate expresses to D’Arcy that she’s not keen on putting her life on hold for 18 more years because Max is at the point where he can stay home alone without it being a Child Protective Services issue. But she’s certain Ben will be thrilled … and D’Arcy has to do backflips and somersaults to try and not reveal to Kate that she knows Ben does not want more children. Awkward.

Meanwhile, Deputy Liv decides to post the UFO footage she obtained to see if anyone else saw it. Ben advises her to not use the town’s name in her post because people already think of it as the ‘murder town’ so he doesn’t need ‘UFO town’ on top of that. She changes it to ‘UFO seen near Jessup’. Unfortunately no one believes the footage is real and the comments on the video aren’t very nice. But Mike and Liv are called to a neighborhood for an ’emergency’ — Abigail Hodges is having a yard sale, selling off Sam’s items, something a neighbor believes is profiting from murder. Mike reminds him that she is innocent until proven guilty and send him away. Abigail thanks Mike, and when he sees a hat that he thinks makes him look like Dick Tracy he offers to buy it from Abigail. She tells Mike that Sam only wore it once because he’d left his other hat on a plane and then she got emotional and said she couldn’t sell it to him. Mike then saw a box of books, murder mysteries, that Sam had tried to get him to read. He again offers to buy the books but Abigail says that if Sam wanted Mike to have them, then he should consider them a gift. The whole encounter had Mike and Liv seeing that Abigail was showing real signs of grief, leaving Mike to question his arrest of her for Sam’s murder. Later Mike remembers that the detective in the books used to hide important notes in the back of artwork in his office so he and Liv go through all the framed pictures on the wall in Sam’s old office. But there have been several doctors through the office since Sam died and the pictures may have been changed. Except the one anatomical drawing. They take it down and remove the back and find a sheet of paper with Galvan/Powell at the top and a list of names. Is this enough to exonerate Abigail and find Sam’s true killer? One name not on the list is Harry Vanderspeigle.

In New York, Asta is stunned when Violinda asks about Harry being an alien. She tries to play it off but Violinda reveals to her she knows all about Harry from Goliath and … Goliath died six months ago. She shows Asta his fossilized body in the back of the art gallery and Asta believes they have now reached a dead end. After she finds Harry and helps him stabilize his human form, she tells him about Goliath being dead. Harry’s hopes of finding someone on this planet just like him are dashed, but when Asta reveals she saw Goliath’s body, and that it was standing up, Harry says they need to go back so he can see it for himself. Apparently the standing up part is very important. Violinda tries to keep Harry from seeing the fossil but Harry gives Asta a look that this is an urgent matter so she takes him to it. Harry starts whacking it like a pinata and it crumbles to dust, leaving behind a large, glowing blue egg. Violinda admits that Goliath combined his and her DNA to create this hybrid baby and that he wanted Harry, one of his own kind, to care for it.

The conversation and revelation is interrupted by Lisa Casper, posing as an art enthusiast looking to buy one of Goliath’s paintings. (She also killed everyone in the pizzeria when they couldn’t give her the information she wanted.) Violinda, holding onto the egg in a canvas bag, tells her none of the art is for sale as it’s from her personal collection. Harry and Asta are hiding and Harry wants to solve this problem by killing ‘the bad woman’ but Asta tells him no more killing. But the goop from the egg leaks through the bag and Lisa tries to take it. A fight ensues and Harry throws Lisa through a skylight. Violinda tells them to take the egg and take care of her child. They run out the back and are noticed by two men who had been following them. Before the men can catch up to them, they are both shot by Lisa who has no idea who they are. (We see they are wearing Galvan/Powell badges.) Harry and Asta get away but now they have to find a way home because the TSA is not about to let them bring a giant egg onto a plane.

So they take the train to keep a low profile. Asta leaves Harry along to get some snacks, and Harry ponders his life, Goliath and this egg he’s now charged with caring for. He has no idea when it will hatch because he’s never dealt with something with combined DNA. It could be any minute or it could be a year. Harry hears the door to their cabin and thinks it’s Asta with his ice cream sandwich — which he decided he no longer wants — but it’s not Asta, it’s Lisa Casper who followed a trail of goop apparently to the train and down the corridor to the cabin. She tries to take the egg and she and Harry fight but none of her training can match whatever it is that Harry is doing to evade her kicks and punches. He finally grabs her and slams her into the window, breaking it out completely. Then his two little hands come out and grasp her throat as she realizes he’s the alien she’s been tracking for General Wright. But that realization is gone in the blink of an eye as Harry holds Lisa out the window just far enough for a passing train to take her head off! He tosses her body out the window and sits back down as if nothing happened. When Asta returns she asks how the window got broken and Harry said it is a cheaply made train. But when he turns to her, there is blood covering the side of his face. He tells Asta he may have killed ‘the bad lady’.

Back in Patience, Dan gives Asta and Harry a ride back to Harry’s cabin but notes when Harry exits the truck that neither of them have spoken since he picked them up. Asta tells him about the egg Harry has and Dan says he liked it better when they didn’t talk. Asta does too. But Dan awkwardly congratulates Harry on being … a father? Asta says at least Harry now has a use for that stupid bunker he built, which he reminds her was to keep her safe while everyone else on the planet died (Dan sarcastically thanks him for the invitation), and when they enter the cabin they are all surprised when a group of people yell ‘SURPRISE!’ Ben tells Harry to give a speech and Harry just says ‘Get out of my house!’ And inside the duffel bag he’s carrying, the egg begins to hatch.
