Stephen King’s It is back on track with a new director about to sign on the dotted line. Andy Muschietti, director of horror hit Mama, is in final negotiations to take over the project from Cary Fukunaga, who departed over “creative differences” with New Line Cinema of the Memorial Day weekend.
The project, which was rumored to be moving back to Warner Brothers, is staying put at New Line. The studio will be looking for a writer to retool the script once Muschietti’s deal is finalized. The plan is still to produce the film over two parts.
Casting is still an issue, however, with the previously announced Will Poulter (who was to play the villainous clown Pennywise) no longer attached to the project. He could still return depending on scheduling and the new director’s vision for the character. One of Fukanaga’s sticking points with New Line was their desire to cast a “name” actor in the role. They may still prevail with Muschietti on board.
It was to have begun filming in June. A new start date has yet to be scheduled.
