We’ve had plane crashes. We’ve had super-storms. There have been earthquakes, sink holes, mudslides, ferry boat crashes, active shooters, and every possible disaster you can think of in Seattle for the last 14 seasons. Enter: THE FOG. It’s not even the season finale, but TeamShonda is doing what they do best and priming us up with all sorts of shenanigans for what will certainly be a roaring cliff-hanger (assuming we get a Season16 … which is still on the table, I think.) [Editors Note: ABC renewed the series for a 16th and 17th season on May 10.]
Jaggie & the camping. Well, she tried. Cute and sweet and silly and perhaps the only non-disastrous portion of this week’s episode since Maggie’s – what was that? Bug sting? Bee bite? Non-discriminate spider assault turned out to be nothing. ‘I would never force you to do a crossword.’ Maggie, settle down. Though props to Jackson’s ‘Guess God’s water just broke too.’ Because everyone was wondering where the hell those two were camping that it was pristine sunshine while Seattle was having a gray-gone-superstorm looking cloud cover.
No surprises that Teddy goes into labor at the end of the episode. She had to have that baby sometime this season. Also really not surprised that she’s on the ‘OMG Owen kick again.’ Just when Link has confronted Amelia about whether or not she’s ‘in the past’ or ‘in the future’ with Leo and Owen. (After being snuck out of the house because they fell asleep and Mer’s poor kids have had enough strange men sprung on them.) All I can say is POOR KORACICK! He really did grow on us! Guess he won’t be around for Season 16. [Editor’s Note: Greg Germann has been uppped to a series regular for Season 16.] And also – ‘the only one?’ Weren’t you married to Henry once? And said he was the only one who did yadda yadda yadda? Get it together, Altman.
Can’t ever remember a season ending (and this is just the episode before the finale) where the drama of the doctors was actually – and surprisingly – shared with the patients. It’s either full Doctor-Drama with a hint or shading of patient issue or (was it Season 3? With the boy in the quick-drying cement?) where it’s all patient focused (because nothing else was happening …) This has Golden-Blood Boy, Migrant Girl, Quadriplegic Woman, and Agoraphobic Golden-Blood Woman all wrapped deeply into the tangled web of Doctor-Drama. Refreshing!
SOOOOOO cliché that we threw Meredith into the hyperbaric chamber with Alex. Because you KNEW something was gonna happen where she’d literally be trapped inside. And DeLuca had to throw himself under the bus to save her and her kids – for a multitude of reasons – but especially after Jo confronted him with the ‘do you love her?’ and his crap answer was ‘who wouldn’t?’ I mean it’s noble. Ish. But we’ve been down this road before … Meredith and the clinical trial and Webber jumping in to protect her … I feel like they will sort this out. They always do. After 15 seasons and everything they’ve all done wrong? The only one who has ever spent time in jail is poor Derek. For reckless driving.
We’re putting all the hero worship into play this week – and not just with DeLuca saying HE put the girl in under Ellis Grey’s insurance (and WHO tipped them off? THAT massive insurance company would not be looking THAT closely. Nope. Nope. Nope. Shenanigans!) But Owen too! He’s not evil. He’s just not a great guy, except for when he does stuff like ‘who better to fix this situation than the 4-tour-VET who has recently undergone some much needed therapy to address-but-not-solve his issues…’ THAT guy. SO yes, we’re all agog and a-gush over McTrauma (yes … since we were bringing up Judy Dolls, Evil Spawn, and drowning in the sound, seemed right to go back to the Mc-Phases) swooping in to save the day by physically carrying Agoraphobic-Golden Blood Woman OUT of the plane.
And into the fog. And a car crash. I guess Owen drove himself to the airport (in record time I might add) to retrieve the golden blood? So that’s why no emergency rig or sirens to bust them out of that traffic. And you knew an accident (fog or not) was coming. Too straightforward to sort it out any other way. Schmidt is really becoming a lovable character with a spine. Too bad Kim is such a jerk. And continuing to be a jerk. We shall call him McJerk. Hellmouth still loud. Qadri still racing/rushing everywhere. WHAT HAPPENED TO PARKER!? Or can we still only afford three interns at a time when Koracick is around?
Jo’s healing moment with Mer (and also when was the last time we kicked open an episode with a really sketchy nightmare like that? Anyone else having flashbacks to the start of Season 5 where Derek died the first time after the house of candles?) was really something. Touching and lovely that she opened up about drowning in the sound and giving up. I think we all forget sometimes, because it was (A) so long ago and (B) characters like Jo are so deeply woven into the tapestry of Grey’s Anatomy — that Jo actually WASN’T around for those instances and those things have actually never been discussed. (I think the only ones left from Mer’s drowning are her, Alex, Bailey, and Webber. Everyone else is either dead or in the parking lot of no return …) And confessing the love about Derek and how scared she is about DeLuca … all very whole and healed. Well done, Meredith Grey. You grew up to save the world.
Nice to see Catherine back, albeit wretched circumstances. Lots of things all very suddenly tossed high into the air. Everyone will be on the edges of their seats for next week’s season finale to see what gets caught, what lands safely, and what splatters to the ground in a blazing catastrophe.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday at 8:00 PM on ABC.
