Grey’s Anatomy :: Head Over High Heels

ABC

The one thing that Grey’s Anatomy does better than put hot-button issues at the forefront of their episodes as of late? Recycle plot lines in a mangled fashion so that you almost don’t recognize that they’re being recycled.

Here we go again with Jo and her trauma-drama. Maybe she needs to go see the therapist that Owen’s seeing so that she doesn’t end up like Ava, Izzie, and Lexie. Blowing Alex off continually? Sort of her M.O. and we expect it. Spiraling out of control and coming to work drunk? Well … Avery tried to be nice … but seriously. We knew that ultimatum from Alex wasn’t going to go well. Disaster at Casa Karev … with no immediate hope for solutions on the horizon.

Meanwhile at Casa Jaggie … they’re moving in together. Or maybe. That was sort of left inconclusive as they both closed their days out with grief – Jackson dealing with Jo’s drunken drama and Maggie trying to keep Richard in his place and also responding to an emergent issue on one of Niko Kim’s patients.

Pregnant lady who didn’t know she was pregnant – who started off as Qadri’s patient and then became Bailey, Meredith, and DeLuca’s patient … we’ve had that happen before. There were actually so many patient-driven incidences this week it was almost hard to keep track of them all! We haven’t had that in a while! It was nice to see the quadriplegic mom and gender non-binary child – Toby – return, even if that was four episodes ago (possible that they’ve been at the hospital this whole time? Or that Grey’s just pauses in a bubble when it comes to certain patients while other things happen in and around the Grey-Sloan atmosphere.)

And Alex’s ultra-rare-blood patient is still there. (With Meredith making desperate calls to Cristina AND Marie Cerone … because once with that plot line wasn’t enough. Of course, every now and again we have to throw names up to remind us of characters who still exist … so why didn’t we throw up the name Callie Torres when ‘pop-pop’ came in with his boy Josh … who clearly both spent time there during the OrthoGod reign of Calliope Torres?)

Guess we’re stuck with DeLuca now that the kids are encountering him. Ugh. Just hope that doesn’t end with disaster for them or Mer. Still think he’s only been parted from Bello for a hot second so Mer is still definitely the rebound. And poor Bailey! Having to deal with Tuck calling Ben dad because Tucker got butthurt! (I think for a hot minute we all forgot there was a Tucker Sr.) Love that coffee cart (and subsequent) exchange of ‘my life vs your life’ between Bailey and Mer because back in Mer’s intern days it was all ‘I don’t want to hear about your personal life or your sex life!’ when it came to Meredith Grey.

Missing Teddy this week. Now we have a route to Owen’s problem. Still doesn’t change who he is, though it may help. And Koracick is going to stick it out with Teddy. He hit rock bottom when God took his son. So this love pentangle is a walk in the park for him. Glad to hear Amelia recognizes that she’s not using Link, but choosing him, despite Owen. Niko Kim – WAY out of line with Schmidt. But they all do that. Cristina did, goodness knows. (With Burke? With Owen? With Ross? With all of them, I’m sure.) Mer too. (Too many times to count with Derek.) And Alex is the king of that bad behavior. Maybe that’s why the first three left him. You have a bad day, you make a mistake, your partner tries to provide a comfort? BLAM you throw up their failures in their face because you can’t face your own. Standard M.O. for hot-shot doctors in Seattle, even when they were interns.

And Richard – loved that phrasing about being a ‘dry drunk.’ He’s absolutely right. He may not have drank, but he was angry, he smashed up that bar – and like he said – got lucky he has a lot of money to settle. Stiletto-chest-stab Gemma was a bittersweet encounter because her situation was hilarious, but super sad for the reality behind it. Glad that Richard, despite some ornery battles, seems to be getting her back on track. Anyone else catch DeLuca holding that newborn looking at Meredith and go – ‘OH GAWD NO.’ (And hopefully it was just a show of ‘See? I’m good with kids.’)

Only four episodes left before we call Season 15 … can’t wait to see what E23 brings next week!

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday at 8:00 PM on ABC.
