Disney updates its movie release schedule

Walt Disney Pictures

Everyone was wondering what kind of moves Disney would make once the merger with Fox was completed, and today the studio made a major announcement about its upcoming movie release schedule through … 2027. The most notable news coming from Disney is the announcement of three new Star Wars movies, but its currently not known whose Star Wars trilogy this is. Rian Johnson is working on his own trilogy while Game of Thrones showrunners David benioff and D. B. Weiss are crafting their own trilogy. So we’ll have to wait a bit before the studio reveals more details on those films.

James Cameron’s Avatar sequels have also been delayed. Avatar 2 moves from December 18, 2020 to December 17, 2021. That pushes Avatar 3 two years down the line to December 22, 2023, and Avatar 4 moves to December 19, 2025 with Avatar 5 completing the series on December 17, 2027.

The studio also has plans for eight new Marvel movies by the end of 2022, while the New Mutants film has been delayed again to March 2020 (but after the CinemaCon presentation, it was clear the movie was not going to be shuffled off to Hulu). It’s not known yet which of the Marvel films will open on the scheduled 2020 dates, but the odds are it will be two of the three known to be in the works: Black Widow, Shang Chi and The Eternals. Disney has not mentioned any further Fox/Marvel properties, so it’s unclear if any of the untitled Marvel films could include more from Deadpool, the X-Men or the Fantastic Four.

Outside of the superhero arena, other films are on the move. Fox 2000’s The Art of Racing in the Rain moves up to August 9 of this year, and Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not is released August 23, while Ad Astra is pushed back to September 20, 2019 and Disney’s Artemis Fowl moves to May 29, 2020. Staying put are awards season hopefuls The Woman in the Window (October 4, 2019) and Ford V. Ferrari (November 15, 2019). Maleficent: Mistress of Evil remains in the October 18, 2019 slot, with Frozen 2 still on for November 22, 2019 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker remaining on schedule at December 20, 2019. Spies in Disguise from Fox/Blue Sky Studios moves from September to Christmas.

Some other titles announced for 2020 include Fox’s Underwater (January 10), a third Kingsman movie (February 14), and Call of the Wild shifts from December 25 to February 21. Not moving anywhere are Pixar’s Onward (March 6) and Disney’s live-action Mulan remake (March 27).

  1. I’m not sure if I’m excited for more Avatar films. The release date always changes and my excitement level dies a little each time. Curious about more Star Wars films, I’m just afraid I’ll get bored of them.

    • The Avatar movies better be amazing after all the delays (same with New Mutants). I’m fine with more Star Wars. It’s a new story and they’re not going to do the one-a-year overkill. The one everyone seems to be overlooking on that list is a new Indiana Jones movie is listed for 2021!
