Doom Patrol vs the Bureau of Normalcy

Warner Bros. Television

When we last saw our team of reluctant heroes, Vic had been abducted by the Bureau of Normalcy and now they have two people to find and bring back. The search for the Chief was put on the back burner as Larry had to explain to everyone what the Bureau was — and that he himself had been experimented on at The Ant Farm — and then had to deal with Vic’s dad showing up after he got some alarming readings from Vic’s system … even though he was supposedly no longer connected to Vic’s OS. But the fact that Vic had removed his OS was what triggered the alarms.

Lucky for Vic and the others, Silas Stone has deep connections with the Bureau … but they are not interested in releasing the famous Cyborg without anything in return, so Silas cuts a deal (behind the team’s back). Making their way to The Ant Farm — Silas, Cliff, Larry and Jane with a conspicuously absent Rita — the group breaks in and takes a harrowing elevator ride to the subterranean lair where Silas’s plan is revealed: he’s turning over the other members of the team in exchange for his son. Good thing Rita didn’t come along after all.

What Silas doesn’t know is that Vic seems to be experiencing some sort of mental breakdown, seeing and hearing disturbing images about his mother and Silas that could be a result of his tampering with his operating system. And that makes it all the more difficult for Vic to trust that his father is truly there to take him home. Meanwhile, the rest of the team are held in different cells undergoing their own observation.

For Larry, the Bureau is most interested in the Negative Spirit inside of him and somehow manages to vacuum the thing out, containing it in a large glass vial. Cliff is looked at as a poorly constructed piece of junkyard scraps, even though he keeps telling them he’s a human brain in a metal body, and is stuck on the ceiling by a large magnet while a ‘SCRAP’ sticker is stuck on his forehead. Jane is being tortured by the guy whose arm she broke when Vic was abducted, but the guy was a little too into Resevoir Dogs for her taste, begging the guy to cut off her ears already so she didn’t have to listen to any more Ace of Base. But her nonchalance in the face of dismemberment really rattled the guy and when his CD started skipping, he hit the player which switched the song to Tracy Ullman’s ‘They Don’t Know’ … which brought Karen back from the depths of the Underground. Unfortunately for her captor, he’s now her new paramour and they both love the book ‘The Fault in Our Stars’. It also helped Jane avoid being hacked into little pieces and the two lovebirds exited the cell.

It turned out that Rita did come after all as she had blobbed herself and was residing inside of Cliff long enough to put Silas’ actual plan into motion. As she released the magnet, dropping Cliff onto his surveyor, the pair escaped and rescued Larry — who hesitated when deciding to bring the Negative Spirit with him — and the three ran into Karen and her new love … which was not part of the plan. That didn’t last long though as Jane (or maybe it was Hammerhead) punched the guy across the room. Larry did release the Spirit which went to the control room and unlocked all the other cells, releasing all of the other unusual beings the Bureau was holding, including a horde of ambulatory butts. One of the more ridiculous things we’ve see on the show so far, but at least the butts stopped Darren Jones and his men in their tracks, allowing the others to go find Vic and Silas.

Find them they did, although not in exactly the condition they had hoped. Vic’s mental breakdown turned violent as his distrust of his father reached a fever pitch, punching Silas in the face into unconsciousness (we don’t know his condition at this point). And the Vic heard it … the cackle of Mr. Nobody, revealing everything Vic had been experiencing was all him, just another of his methods to break them down so they’ll stop looking for Niles. The others don’t know Nobody caused the horrific scene they stumbled on to, but what happens from here is sure to have serious consequences.

Doom Patrol streams new episodes each Friday on DC Universe with select titles, including the original series, now available in 4K HDR.
