Only two new series premiered this week, both on the same day of the same year, on two different networks, and both produced the same number of episodes (but only one aired all of theirs). One show starred a beloved British Dame, and the other starred a guy who would find real fame on a popular, long-running sitcom two years later, Read on to learn a little more about these two comedies.

May 30 – Julie

  • Cast: Julie Andrews, James Farentino, Eugene Roche, Hayley Tyrie, Rider Strong
  • Notable Guests: Kevin Scannell, Jennifer Edwards, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Robert Wagner, Eric Christmas, Dick O’Neill
  • Synopsis: Julie Carlisle is a television personality who marries a veterinarian Sam. Julie, along with her new husband and stepchildren, relocates to Sioux City, Iowa. The series chronicled her new life in coping with a career and family.
  • Network: ABC
  • Broadcast History: One season, 7 episodes (1 unaired), last broadcast on July 4, 1992
  • Trivia: Julie Andrews’ husband Blake Edwards was the director and executive producer. It was cancelled after six episodes had aired. The entire series was broadcast in the UK during Christmas 1993, but it has never been repeated in the UK or US.

May 30 – Vinnie & Bobby

  • Cast: Matt LeBlanc, Robert Torti, John Pinette, Joey Lauren Adams, Ron Taylor, Sharyn Leavitt, Fred Stoller
  • Notable Guests: Mike Genovese, Vidal Peterson, Debbe Dunning, Jennifer Runyon, William Smith, Kym Whitley
  • Synopsis: Set in Chicago, Illinois, the series centers on Vinnie Verducci, a construction worker, and his roommate, Bobby Grazzo who share the same apartment Vinnie and his father once shared.
  • Network: FOX
  • Broadcast History: One season, 7 episodes, last broadcast on September 5, 1992
  • Trivia: The series was a retooled version of Married… with Children spin-off Top of the Heap, which starred Matt LeBlanc, Joseph Bologna, Joey Lauren Adams, Rita Moreno and Leslie Jordan. Only LeBlanc and Adams returned for the new iteration. Unlike Top of the Heap, none of the Married… with Children cast made guest appearances.
