Oh. My. Gosh.
Was that the way the 20th season of The Bachelor was supposed to end?
With our milquetoast Bachelor Ben Higgins ultimately contented and satisfied and completely certain of himself?
With his chosen fiancé Lauren smiling and joyful and grinning ear to ear?
With the spurned, once equally loved JoJo — later reappearing on stage at the aftershow to “confront” our Bachelor — as a reject with understanding? With gratefulness? And in reasonable state of mind?
What fantasy world are we living in?
One where The Bachelor’s hometown pastor is present, ready, willing and able to marry the happy couple right then and there at show’s conclusion?
One where both families of The Bachelor and his beloved are present and jubilant and cheerful?
One where the so-called Bachelor Nation, the rapid fans of the show, appear pleased with the outcome? Satisfied? Gratified?
No fighting? No tears of regret? No second thoughts? No glares? No consternation? Everyone honest and peaceful and pleasant?
I guess so.
I mean, I’m not certain what I wanted out of the season finale. tweet
Or what I was expecting exactly. I suppose I simply wanted something interesting.
I wasn’t necessarily looking for drama. I didn’t need some all-encompassing proclamation to close out the show. Thinking about it, it would have been strange to see our Bachelor’s promise fulfilled with a marriage ceremony. Yes, it would have been cute … but also disingenuous and canned.
But to see everything — and I mean everything — wrapped up neatly with a giant red bow atop the package … THAT, in and of itself, was a little odd, don’t you think?
Replay everything and ask yourself this: Was there one thing out of place? Anything at all to really complain about? Could something have happened to make it even better than it ended up being? As it turned out, even the rebuffed JoJo got the satisfaction of becoming the next Bachelorette. Talk about your satisfaction guaranteed, we witnessed it from start to finish.
So, really: What was it I was looking for? Hoping for? What didn’t come to fruition that fell short ultimately at day’s end? Could any other conclusion be more satiating?
I suppose not.
And that, folks, might be the strangest thing of all.
