The second episode of Scream gave us a murder right at the top of the show. Except, being still so early in the season, this death did not “hurt” the way Noah surmised the TV deaths would. The victim this week was Audrey’s girlfriend Rachel, a character we barely knew from the first episode. We got a little more information about her — she suffers from depression, she’s a cutter, she’s being cyberbullied because of the video dead Nina shot and posted — which was just enough for everyone to assume that when she was found dangling from a ceiling fan that she committed suicide. Until coroner Maggie determined that she could not have snapped her neck that way and the body had been moved (which answered that question of why the body was moved in the first place).
Meanwhile, before anyone even knows Rachel is dead, a journalist, Piper Shaw (Amelia Rose Blaire), with a popular podcast focusing on serial killers (think Serial) has popped into town to look into Nina’s death and become our next red herring. As a journalist, she knows a lot about the citizens of Lakewood, but does she have that knowledge just from her investigative skills or does she have a deeper connection to the town? If nothing else, Piper presents us with the possibility of a new red herring/potential identity of the killer by revealing that Emma’s father, who apparently is no longer in Lakewood, was the sole survivor of the Brandon James killing spree.
That information, coupled with the fact that the killer has targeted Emma throughout the episode, could lead one to believe that her father has indeed come back for some type of revenge. First there is the mass texting of a GIF of the killer posing with Nina’s body floating in the pool behind him. Then Emma’s on-the-outs boyfriend gets a text from “Emma” asking him to meet her at the coffee shop … but she never sent a text.
In the last few moments of the episode, Emma is home alone when the security system is triggered. The back door is open, but how? The security company calls and the voice on the phone tells her the police are on the way and engages in some small talk to keep her occupied. The questions become a little creepy, like when she is asked if she likes horror movies, and when she closes and locks a window that is now open, the voice tells her to ask herself if she just locked him out or locked him in. Emma knows she’s being watched and is told that these killings all started with her mother (the girl who was used as bait in Brandon James’ botched capture) and will end with her. Since no one else in town knows that Maggie was that girl, as far as we’ve been told, the obvious candidate for the killer’s identity is Emma’s father. Could it be him, or is the wool being pulled over our eyes?
In other developments:
- Emma confessed to her mother (while she was doing the examination on Rachel’s body) that she was partly involved in the filming of the video of Audrey and Rachel in that she did nothing to stop Nina, and now carries around a lot of guilt due to her inaction. She is still unaware that the death is not a suicide.
- The “blood” smear on Noah’s forehead was finally revealed to be red paint, which he used to paint the word “DOOSH” on dumb jock Jake’s truck.
- Emma saw a shadowy figure in the alley behind the coffee shop where she works and, while running around the building to the front, nearly takes Will’s head off with a 2×4. When Emma tells the story to Kiernan, he puts it in her head that it could have been Will all along trying to scare her and then suddenly appear to be her protector.
- Noah was lured to the football field with a text from Riley, but when he got there it seemed that he might become a surprising casualty. Turns out it really was from Riley who just wanted to get him out there to look at the stars (and technically it was kind of a date … a very awkward date).
- Mad Men‘s Bryan Batt shows up as the Mayor of Lakewood (now nicknamed Murderville) … and potential killer?
- Nina’s boyfriend Tyler is still the number one suspect in her death since he hasn’t been seen since she died. Ummm, did no one see his head in the hot tub? And why would the killer even bother to hide it?
