Preacher :: Free will or Divine Intervention?

AMC

Here we are midway through the final season and the gang is one step closer to being together. Cassidy and the Archangel are back at the Bar and Grail when Tulip and Jesus arrive, and everyone but Cas and Tulip can see that these two are in love regardless of how much Cas insists that’s his best mate’s girlfriend. There was a funny moment when Tulip asked Cas if he told Jesse the two of them had made love, promising she wouldn’t be mad, and when he admitted it, she socked him right in the kisser. Ah, love.

But Tulip is ready to hit the road with Jesus in tow — he wants to see Las Vegas — while Cassidy now feels a duty to go to Australia and help Jesse, hoping Tulip will join him so the whole gang is back together. Nope, she’s on a mission to do Tulip and no one else. And she takes off, telling Jesus all the fun and amazing things they can do like robbing banks, which prompts Jesus to have a vision of how robbing a bank could go horribly wrong for someone who’s never used a gun before. Maybe hitting the road isn’t such a great idea after all considering he’s really needed for that conference back at Masada, the first thing His Father has let him do in 2000 years. And maybe Tulip should take Cas up on his suggestion.

Tulip is adamant that she is not turning back but was it her guilt/free will that caused her to turn the car around or some Divine Intervention?

At the bar, the Archangel is awaiting his female companion and when she arrives the two have a dance and then almost shake the place to the ground with some energetic sex. But after it’s all over, she ends up with a sword between the eyes because … she’s a demon. Of course, just like when Cas ripped open the angel’s throat, you can’t kill a demon that easily and she regenerates for what looks to be a neverending battle between the two of them. Luckily Tulip returns and she and Cas finally go to join Jesse.

Jesse, however, finds himself in a different, unexpected reunion with Eugene … and the Saint. Using Genesis to get himself a rental car alerted the Saint and as he pulled out of the garage, there was Eugene on the corner. He saw Jesse and told him to go and he made it away before the Saint could shoot at him. But, again, Jesse left Eugene behind. The Saint knew Jesse would come back because if he didn’t, he knew the Saint would kill Eugene. Jesse did know that and against his better judgment turned the car around to save Eugene.

Finding the boy and again avoiding the Saint, Jesse apologized to Eugene for sending him to Hell and then leaving him there, claiming he didn’t know he could go there to save him. Eugene seemed to accept the apology but they still had the issue of the Saint to deal with. Jesse was able to set up an elaborate scheme at a construction site that ended with the Saint being slammed with a wrecking ball, which gave Jesse and Eugene a chance to escape. But you can’t keep the Saint of Killers down that easily.

Unable to hot wire a car, Jesse was able to use Genesis to steal a police car, which again alerted the Saint to his whereabouts. With Eugene in the back seat, Jesse assumed the pair were home free but there was something nagging at Eugene — yes, Jesse apologized but for Eugene that wasn’t quite enough. So he shot Jesse through the seat. Swerving to a stop, Jesse fell out of the car and at the feet of the Saint.

Things are not looking good for Jesse Custer.
