After Alfred’s harrowing encounter in the woods with Gully — and we still don’t know if Gully survived the ordeal — Mama Pennyworth is being very overly protective of her injured son, to the point where she surprised everyone in the room with her sudden skill at handling a gun. Is there something Mary’s been keeping from us? And she’s none too pleased when Thomas, Martha and Lucius show up at their place to drag Alfie into another adventure that could save London … or be the end of them all.
Storming the Raven League HQ is seen as such a life or death mission that Alfred makes amends with Sandra, much to her father’s dismay, Thomas and Martha actually agree on marriage in case something happens to him and she’ll at least have something good to tell their child about his or her father (okay, we know it’s a boy, right?), and Aziz, Dave Boy and Lucius form their own bond of friendship. Each and every one of them are making peace with their decisions in life just in case it all goes sideways.
But they aren’t the only ones planning to work their way into the Raven fortress. Bet and Peg are determined to get themselves in with the help of Salt’s girlfriend Vikki to rescue Mrs. Gaunt on behalf of the late Lord Harwood, and Vikki has to put her acting skills to good use to secure an appointment with Salt, as well as entry into the building with two additional women. She really should win an award for her performance, getting them past the guards (or perhaps the guards should be sacked for not recognizing Bet and Peg).
Thomas’ group — Alfred, Dave Boy and Lucius — gain easy entry into the fortress under the guise of Thomas being there in official US government capacity, returning the Ravens’ missing scientist but actually there to steal the single vial of Stormcloud that has been produced. And the mission goes off a bit too easily. They almost make it out of the building, but Salt began to grow suspicious as it was taking much too long for them to ascend to the penthouse level to return Lucius Fox. Needless to say, the four of them are captured. Alfred attempted to use the release of Stormcloud in the building as a threat, but Salt reminded him that it would still kill thousands of people in the surrounding area. That’s not something Alfred wants on his conscience … even is he does die in the process.
While they are being held prisoner, Vikki, Bet and Peg arrive and Vikki gets them in as extra special requests by Salt, implying there’s going to be a wild time in the penthouse with the four of them. Now, perhaps Bet knows the layout of the building from working there (?) but they do maneuver their way through the corridors with ease, finding Frances Gaunt’s cell (don’t tell Katie that Bet slit the throat of a guard) and whisking her away, avoiding guards by ducking into the room where Alfred and his mates are being held. Seeing her old ‘friend’, Bet releases them all so they can try again to get Stormcloud and she and Alfred have a moment of genuine friendship as they hug before she leaves and they go after Salt.
The women don’t make it out of the building though. They are found by guards wandering a hall for which no one has passes, but the guard recognizes Vikki (but not Mrs. Gaunt?!) and escorts them all to the penthouse. Unfortunately, the men are cornered once again in another corridor and brought back to Salt … and Alfred’s father. When they were first captured, Salt wheeled out Arthur to ‘talk sense’ into his son, to convince him his battle was a lost cause. Alfred told Arthur how Mary would visit his grave all the time — Arthur wondered why since she knew it was empty (but whose ashes does she have they she believes are his?) — and that she still loves him. Arthur isn’t budging on his stance but what Alfred said just might have hit a nerve.
When they are with Salt again, Arthur asks if he can speak with Alfie one more time, privately. As he draw his son close, he whispers that he has a gun and that Alfie should use it. He does, mowing down Salt’s guards and getting them all to freedom (although we never see how they escape the fortress). With Stormcloud and Arthur in tow. The men drive away from the fortress, Arthur secured in the back of the convertible, steeling himself for Mary’s reaction when she sees that he’s alive.
The question remains as we head into the season finale — what lengths will Salt go to in order to get Stormcloud back … or will the Raven scientists be able to cook up a new batch to disperse over London?
