There is a lot going on in this week’s episode of Legendary. It’s the first Money Ball of the season with a total of $30,000 on the line, there are THREE rounds of competition and … no one is going home! That certainly takes some weight off of the Houses’ shoulders but now they are all fighting for that coin. But to ratchet up the tension, none of the House will know their final Round One scores until the end, so no one will know who is the Superior House until the winner is announced. Last week’s Pop Tart Ball competition was pretty fierce, so it may be hard to top that.
For Round One of the Plastic Fantastic Ball, the challenge is an all-House production in which they need to choose one toy to embody, and incorporate vogue elements of floor performance. Floor performance is putting your body on the floor and giving poses, legs and sexiness. And this week’s guest judge is Amiyah Scott, actress on Fox series Star, and as Dashaun described her, ‘legendary ballroom Face diva’.
Miyake-Mugler
Miyake-Mugler has a hard road to climb this week after being told by the judges that they like their performances but not their cold vibe, so they need to change that perception and show them a House of love. Their theme for the challenge is going to be a ‘rainbow color doll’ (throughout this part of the challenge, it seems that no one was allowed to actually mention the copyrighted toy name), aka Rainbow Brite. I have to say they really brought a lot of fun to the performance, making sure everyone was smiling and camping it up, and they had some incredible Floor work.
Leiomy said their Floor performance ‘ate it’ (which is a compliment), they all carried, and stepped out of the box. She loved the dynamic and saw them having fun. Amiyah loved the performance and the outfits. Law said the effect was on point. Jameela said she didn’t know where those cold bitches from the past were but this was hot, her favorite performance of theirs in the competition. Megan said she was smiling the whole time, and Diego looks fire, she likes looking at him (who doesn’t, girl?). Leiomy and Dashaun teased her about having her first ‘butch queen crush’. In the end she said the performance felt warm and really happy.
Comme des Garçons
For their toy, they are transforming into a toy car. For the performance they did an awesome job of putting their bodies into the shape of a car, but it actually looked more like a motorcycle from the side. The performance was a bit chaotic too, with three doing Floor (including Tonka), and two walking around which distracted from the Floor work. And then Tonka slipped trying to get off the floor. It was not a good look.
Law said he got the Transformers vibe which he appreciated, the wardrobe was next level, and he didn’t mind the slip. He actually enjoyed the performance. Jameela liked the unique start, the beginning and end were extraordinary, but wanted more Floor performance. Megan apparently had nothing to say as Dashaun skipped over her. Leiomy said the performance was strong at the beginning but it dwindled and became sloppy, they didn’t highlight the Floor performance as much as they should have, and what they did wasn’t strong enough (thank you!). Amiyah loved it, said the chemistry was amazing and she felt transformed.
After the judging, Jameela commented that they made a mistake putting Tonka on the Floor. He has other strengths and he did not need to be the star of the Floor performance.
Balenciaga
Balenciaga is going for a paper dolls look this week, Balenci-dolls, and they killed that part of it. The costumes were amazing with just fronts with tabs, just like paper doll clothing. Mother Shannon did a little bit at the start, there was a motorized toy car, and when they finally got to the Floor part of the performance, they absolutely crushed it.
Jameela sid it was her favorite performance of the night so far, it was thoughtful and graceful. Megan said ‘yes, yes, that’s what I’m talkin’ about!’, they got up there and killed it, every one of them is talented on their own and it looks beautiful when they all come together as a House. Leiomy complimented Shannon on her beauty and said being a Mother in Ballroom is so hard, but she is teaching the world that Mothers are pushing people to be better. There was no comment from Amiyah. Law said he was feeling a particular way about the Barbie and Ken look because they were doing Ken better than he was, but he really enjoyed their top notch performance.
Tisci
Tisci chose the little green toy soldiers as their look, and they slayed, green from head to toe including hair and make-up. And they set the runway on fire with the best performance of the night, with great Floor work and everyone in sync. They had Leiomy screaming through the whole performance.
Megan said it was one thing to dance and one thing to perform, but it’s a whole other thing to entertain and that’s what they did, making sure everyone was happy and excited, making her want to jump on the floor with them. She said their performance was ‘the shit’ and they knew what score she was giving them. Leiomy loved it, calling them one of the Houses to beat. The Floor performance was so sick, this is what she wants to see, a performance taken to the next level. Amiyah said in Toy Story, when they wanted to get shit done, they called the Army guys. Tonight the Army guys, and girl, came out and got shit done. She told them to keep doing what they’re doing. Law just said they reminded him of his childhood because he played with those little green Army men (but not in a way most boys played with them, mind you). Jameela said it is disrespectful how they won’t let the other Houses breathe. She didn’t know how they’d top the Pop Tart Ball performance, but they did. The look was incredible, and she gave a shout out to Stanley for his Floor moment, saying it was so special, and said over all it was the best performance of the night.
Nina Oricci
Their theme was going to be marionette puppets. They had some great costumes, and the make-up was spectacular, really making them look like carved wood. I think they spent more time on the make-up than the performance because it was … okay. Granted, they had a tough act to follow but during the performance, Law asked Jameela if she was bored, and she said yes. Not a good sign.
Leiomy loved the storyline, loved the effect, and the performance was good but it had the same tone throughout. She wanted more ups and downs in the performance. Amiyah loved the effects and plastic hair, and while nothing jumped out at her it was still great throughout. Law told them the production was great, it was Gillette’s night and he could not take his eyes off of her, but she was such a standout that everyone else fell to the wayside and he didn’t get it as a House performance. Jameela said they are an amazing House and she agrees with Leiomy, that they were missing one wow moment, but it was good, she just wanted more of a climax. Megan said it made it want to keep watching to see what happened next, she liked the presentation and the make-up, they were so in character and they literally looked like puppets. She enjoyed the performance and the uniqueness.
At the end of the first round … well, we don’t know who is in first place but we can guess that it’s Tisci.
Round Two: European Runway as a Unit
For this round, two or three House members had to walk the runway in a synchronized routine and they must get tens across the board to continue. Those still standing at the end of the first part of the round would then send one member of the House to walk in their name until one House is left standing. Balenciaga got their Superior House advantage from last week and used it to give themselves immunity in the first part so they would automatically be in the second part of the round. The winning House will receive $5,000. Here’s how everyone stacked up:
- Malik and Father Arturo Mugler – chopped
- Egypt, Tonka and Mother Stasha Garçon – chopped
- Cha Cha and Mother Shannon Balenciagi – immune
- Mother Jia, Dro and Stanley Tisci – 10 (even though they were not all walking in sync)
- Karma and Gillette Oricci – 10 (even though their arms were no in sync)
With three Houses still standing, it came down to the individual walks. Cha Cha walked for Balenciaga and Gillette walked for Oricci, and Balenciaga got the win 3-2, even though it looked like Gillette actually gave a better walk. Next it was Cha Cha against Jia Tisci, and Cha Cha won again … and again I think the opponent did a better walk. But the win gave Balenciaga the first official win of the night, scoring $5,000 for the House and putting them in First Place (the House with the most money at the end of the night is Superior House).
Round Three: Team Duck Walk
This is one of my favorite vogue elements, and it’s also the most physically demanding, walking and dancing in a crouched position. It’s usually done for a short amount of time in a performance but now the Houses have to keep doing the Duck Walk for the entire performance. As in the first round, each House must score tens across the board to continue to the individual Duck Walk challenge. Here’s how that played out:
- Tati, Prince and Diego Mugler – 10
- Savion and Milan Garçons – 10
- Jupiter and Kalik Balenciaga – chopped
- Tray and Simone Tisci – 10
- Father Omari, Alora and Remy Oricci – 10 (judges called them the cleanest and it’s three of them, and they were not wrong)
Now it comes down to four individuals to Duck Walk. First up was Omari Oricci vs Simone Tisci, and the judges gave it to Simone. Then Simone faced off against Milan Garçons, and again Simone scored a win. Finally it came down to Simone against Prince Mugler … and by this time they had to give it to Simone because she just Duck Walked against three people and didn’t lose an ounce of her stamina. She said she was tired after that, but her win earned the House of Tisci $10,000, putting them in first place.
And now, with the House Mothers and Fathers on the runway, Dashaun was finally able to reveal the scores from the first round. In fifth place with a score of 34 – Comme des Garçons (toy car). In fourth place with a score of 39 – Nina Oricci (marionettes). In third place with a score of 46 – Miyake-Mugler (rainbow dolls).
The House of Balenciaga, with $5,000 in the bank, and the House of Tisci, with $10,000, were the top two House of the night … and they were separated by one point. Surprisingly, Tisci did not score a perfect 50 for their toy soldiers routine, but they did score a 49, which was good enough to win the round, earn an additional $15,000 for a total of $25,000 for the night, becoming this week’s Superior House.
And no one is eliminated so five Houses remain to compete in next week’s Ovah! Ball.
