The age of the summer blockbuster started 40 years ago in 1975 when Universal Pictures released a film by a young director named Steven Spielberg. That film, Jaws, became the number one film of all time for several years and took what had traditionally been a slow time for film releases and turned it into the age of the blockbuster.
To celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary, Universal Pictures, Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events are teaming up to bring the film back to the big screen — 500 of them — on June 21 for screenings at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz will provide an introduction to the film. An encore showing is presently scheduled for June 24.
