Dynasty the Musical

Did anyone know this week’s Dynasty was a musical episode?

There were some non-musical moments with Culhane sneaking a soccer player into Sam’s new, unfinished hotel for safe keeping — the guy was running from some bad hombres in Cuba — and Kirby imposing herself on said player after getting a cold shoulder from Culhane and being told by her father that if she’s acting like a petulant child after dating Michael for five minutes, perhaps it’s a good thing he broke it off with her when he did. He’s got a point.

There was also some business with Dominique, Jeff (who seems to have recovered nicely from his incurable neurotoxicity) and Monica that didn’t require singing. Jeff is still pissed at his mother about screwing up the whole ‘frame Adam’ scheme and she admitted she took the cuff link to protect Jeff from Blake. But now he wants her to serve up some justice to Adam, and everyone else at the wine tasting party, by drugging the wine. She doesn’t get the chance because Cristal almost catches her but she is more than willing to take credit for something else that happens later.

Where the music does come in involves Fallon (and we know Elizabeth Gillies has some pipes, but what about the rest of the cast?). The whole thing was set into motion when Adam decides to try and screw over Cristal by hiding one of her invitation gift baskets in Fallon’s room. The dog found the basket and accidentally turned on the gas in the fireplace in her room.

After being caught trying to deliver Liam’s manuscript to him to jog his memory, Fallon spent some time in her room and then found Adam and Blake being buddy-buddy after Cristal asked Blake to spend a day with Adam to assure him he’s still important to the winery and to Blake (she just wanted Adam out of her hair before he screwed up the party any more than he already had). But while raging at Adam about alerting Liam’s mother that Fallon was coming, Blake stepped in and started singing ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ and Adam joined in. Fallon was very confused by the whole thing and when they were done … neither of them admitted to have been singing anything. Was it all in Fallon’s head or is Adam gaslighting her?

When Fallon learned that Liam and Ashley were getting married that day, she roped Sam into posing as a flower delivery man to (1) retrieve the manuscript she dropped while attempting to climb a wall to get to Liam, and (2) deliver said manuscript to Liam personally because his mother doesn’t know Sam. And once he finally gets past two levels of security, Liam doesn’t know him either. Fallon was guiding Sam by phone, while sitting next to her fireplace, and when she heard Liam on the phone Sam put her on speaker and she broke out into ‘Against All Odd’, and she was really singing (and for some reason even her musical accompaniment was heard over the phone even though that part of it was in her head). But security was on its way so Sam had to hang up. Then when Sam was trying to console her, he broke out into ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ … but he wasn’t actually singing either. He did wonder why it smelled so bad in Fallon’s room though.

At the wine tasting, Cristal showed Blake the new wine labels she had made with hummingbirds and bluebells on them — not the labels Adam had made with her picture on them to make Blake think Cristal was trying to take over — and as she and Sam watched Adam and Cristal have a somewhat heated conversation, Cristal suddenly breaks into ‘Burning Down the House’. Sam takes a verse and has back-up dancers, and Blake and Sam also join in and before she knows it the entire party is doing synchronized choreographed dancing. Fallon thinks she’s really losing her mind at this point, and even more so when she blinks and everything is back to normal.

For some reason, Dominique is lurking around the fringes of the party, and Liam shows up. Not married. Fallon is thrilled because she thinks his reading of his book about their relationship changed his mind and it did … but not how she expected. What he read was a story about a selfish and narcissistic woman and that helped him decide that he just needs some time to himself before he jumps into any relationship.

Adam sees the dog that somehow has the label from the hidden gift basket under his ear and Adam goes to retrieve the basket before anyone finds it. He notices the gas is on in the fireplace and attempts to turn it off, but it seems a spark of static electricity set off an explosion that has burned Adam’s eyes. That’s some karma for ya. Dominique returns to Jeff’s house and tells him and Monica that she didn’t get to drug the wine but Adam got a literal ‘eye for an eye’ punishment, leading Jeff and Monica to consider that their mother may have been responsible for the explosion.

Before the episode ended, Dominique was in her car talking to someone named Vanessa, telling her that they’re going to get everything they’ve always talked about soon. So is Vanessa … a daughter? We know she has another family so it is feasible. And that brings an end to a weirdly entertaining episode.
