Dynasty uses tragedy for laughs

Screengrab

The last episode of Dynasty ended on a rather shocking note as Adam shoved his mother’s face into a fire, perhaps not to kill her but to send her a warning that he is not to be trifled with. This week it seems that the terrible injuries Alexis sustained are nothing but a punchline to a bad joke. I have to hand it to uncredited actress Amy Sutherland for making us feel some sympathy for Alexis while also allowing us to see the fear in her eyes whenever Adam was around to ‘care for’ her. There was even a note of desperation to the performance when Jeff arrived and promised to move Alexis to his home to provide her care. (Not sure that’s a great idea for someone in a burn unit.) But then there were moments of silly comedy when Alexis couldn’t write on her white board fast enough to keep up with conversations, basically ignored by anyone speaking to or about her. I just found it a bit distasteful, especially for anyone whose actually been though such a tragic situation.

The question now is who will replace Nicolette Sheridan? The writers made a point to say Alexis’ vocal chords were damaged a bit from the smoke inhalation, which will explain why her voice will be different when the new actor is hired. And while the hospital will attempt facial reconstruction with skin grafts, Adam helpfully have a nurse a photo of the look he said Alexis wanted to go for, shaving a few years off in the process. So we should start taking bets now on whose face will emerge once those bandages are removed. There are some intriguing suggestions floating around the web like Melinda Clark, who starred in The OC from the current Dynasty producers (and played the wife of Alan Dale, who plays Anders). Former Grant Show co-star Daphne Zuniga, and Elizabeth Hurley (but would Alexis suddenly develop an English accent?). I’m on board with one name in particular – Marcia Cross who starred with Show on Melrose Place, and with Sheridan on Desperate Housewives … which would make her replacing Sheridan particularly juicy. Another one that almost makes sense is Kelly Rutherford, who we’ve already seen on Dynasty as Mrs. Daniels, the fake baby mama hoping to extort Steven and the Carringtons. Could she have been the face on the photo Adam gave to the nurse? Only time will tell.

Aside from making Alexis’ injuries a joke, the episode just spent a lot of time making Adam even more deplorable than he’s already been. His ‘care’ for Alexis has really been nothing but threats and intimidation, using fear to keep her quiet when Jeff comes calling, while Blake and Fallon make light of the accident by basically acknowledging Alexis is a sloppy drunk. But he’s managed to completely charm Blake, so much so that Blake pulls more than a few strings to get Adam’s medical license reinstated so he can practice medicine in Atlanta … and work alongside the soccer team’s doctor. Of course, Adam again sees an opportunity to ascend the ladder by framing the doctor by planting incriminating photos of the women he works with in an account that is sent to everyone attending Adam’s ‘Welcome Home’ party at the manor. That one of the photos in the collection was of Fallon was enough to set Blake off, firing the doctor on the spot without hearing him out (Blake isn’t known for his patience) and giving Adam the newly vacated position. Did no one stop to think how convenient this was?

I really wish they’d make up their minds what they want Fallon to be. She keeps talking up what a great businesswoman she is but … what exactly does she do? If she’s so powerful, why is she always bemoaning the fact that she’s living in her father’s shadow? This week her attempt at making a name for herself involved writing a memoir about her business skills. Let’s not forget she was CEO of Carrington Atlantic for two months. Her own green energy company never went anywhere, and she totally screwed up her position with the Atlantix soccer team. At this point she’s practically delusional as to what her business acumen is. And what happened to that business deal she was starting with Monica in the music industry? And where’s Monica been?? It didn’t help matters when she learned that her book deal was only happening because the publisher wanted a book from Blake. But … she did finally take some action. She bought the publishing company and fired the weasels who were dicking her around. Perhaps she should have looked into who else was on the publishing roster there because she got a big surprise when ‘John Southside’ asked to speak with her and it turned out to be …LIAM!

There was also a little business with Cristal’s brother, who was insisting that she go to thank her father in person for helping her scam Jeff with the fake company, but she is quite adamant that she wants to be nowhere near her family. Poor Sam is roped into playing babysitter for Roberto, accompanying him to a strip club where Beto misbehaves and tries to buy a lap dance for Sam. Later at the party for Adam, Sam walks into Roberto’s guest room and catches him making out with another guy. Roberto tells Sam he’s not gay, but the incident gave Sam a moment to connect with Roberto and assure him it’s okay to be who he is. After that, Beto tells Cristal he’s calling off the dogs their father has sent, but he also reminds her that what he’s doing will only be a temporary fix. Their father will not give up so easily.

And now we have a few weeks to ponder all of this and wonder if we’ll see a new Alexis when the show returns April 19 to finish out its season.
