Well that was something! And we’ll assume you’ve watched the current episode of Dynasty already. If not, be warned there will be a major spoiler ahead so go catch up first and then come back.
Let’s quickly get through the B-story this week which involves Blake’s soccer team, and Jeff’s attempt to get permission to build a youth center for the community. Blake is very preoccupied with the loss of Cristal’s baby and the death of Mark Jennings — and perhaps the murder by his own hands of the innocent hit man he hired — and the arrival of Adam 2.0. So Cristal steps up to the plate because she needs something to occupy her time after losing the baby and Mark, so she teams up with Culhane to work a deal with Jeff to benefit them both. But Jeff being Jeff refuses to work with the Carringtons so they pay off the zoning board to make sure his center isn’t approved. But he screws them over too, selling the property to another company for less than half what the Carringtons offered … but he actually sold it to a dummy corporation set up by Cristal with the help of … her father?! Hmmm. All this time she’s talked about how fearful she is of her family but getting help with this plan makes them seem more cozy than she’s let on. Of course, her father won’t settle for a simple thank you note so now she’s expected to thank him in person. Whoopsie.
The main thrust of this week’s episode revolved around the arrival of Adam at the Carrington mansion, all humble and sweet and just claiming to want to know his family, nothing else, after finding out he’d been kidnapped all those years ago. Of course this is the same guy we first met as George, complete with a British accent that’s now gone (although actor Sam Underwood is actually British so the American accent is not real), who was gaslighting Steven in Paris. And I stand corrected about Steven’s hospitalization. He’s not in rehab, he’s in a mental hospital and now he knows he’s not lost his mind, but how long will it take before he’s able to reveal the truth? It may be hard to convince the doctors that his once imaginary friend is now his very real, assumed dead big brother. (And if we’re looking at age difference, Adam is the ‘older’ brother to Steven and Fallon, and while Underwood is three years older than James Mackay, he’s six years younger than Elizabeth Gillies.) In the original Dynasty, Adam was a villain and he’s certainly getting off to a bad start with Steven. How on earth will they forgive what he did to Steven? Well, that may be the least of their worries.
Adam’s arrival was met with skepticism by everyone … except Blake. The fact that Adam had his baby rattle was more than enough to convince Blake, but it certain threw Alexis for a loop considering her own Adam ruse that backfired spectacularly, but she was somehow still able to avert disaster and keep her name in the clear. So even if she does believe this newcomer is Adam, she can’t accept him or the whole Hank thing will really blow up in her face … hold that thought.
A DNA test proves this Adam is the real deal — even though the previous test confirmed the same thing with Hank — and Fallon and Sam are grudgingly willing to accept the results. But Adam is awfully interested in meeting Steven, so much so that he convinces Blake that they should fly to Paraguay to surprise him, causing Fallon and Sam to do backflips to try and convince Blake that it would not be a good idea to surprise Steven in Paraguay. Blake had enough of their games and decreed they would go, forcing Fallon to spill the beans about Steven being in a mental hospital in Paris. Now, one should wonder why exactly Adam was so insistent on blowing up Steven’s secret since he’s the one responsible for Steven committing himself. Does he think that if everyone sees Steven lose his mind over Adam, trying to convince everyone that he was George, will convince his family that he is in fact out of his mind, leaving Adam a path free and clear to dig himself further into the family? From where I’m sitting, it seems like a terrible plan because I’m willing to bet Fallon (and hopefully Sam) would take Steven’s side and somehow find evidence that Adam was screwing with Steven.
Of course, Adam has one other obstacle in his way — Alexis. Paying her a visit at the loft, where she’s conveniently burning all the evidence she had regarding the Hank ruse, Adam comes bearing tea and a white flag. But his attempt at bonding with his mother takes a nasty turn when we see in flashback that he killed the woman who raised him, and now he has the proof that Alexis faked Hank’s DNA test. But, wanting to bury the hatchet, he gives her the paper saying it would be their secret. She takes the incriminating evidence and sets it alight in the fireplace and …
Adam pushes Alexis’ face into the fire!
Holy shit! We knew Nicolette Sheridan was exiting the series for family reasons (her mother is terminally ill), but we didn’t expect her to leave in such a shocking manner, literally in a blaze of glory. Since Alexis is such an integral part of Dynasty, it’s inevitable that they will have to recast the role such as the original series did when Al Corley left the series and was replaced by Jack Coleman as Steven, with a new face after suffering major burns on an oil rig explosion. The question is who will they recast with? I’m betting we won’t find out until the third season premiere when the bandages come off of Alexis’ face (there are only 7 episodes left this season, so it’s unlikely they’ll have someone new at this point although they did just announce the casting of Dominque Devereaux with Michael Michele).
And with that, Adam has done harm to two members of the family, both who will be able to identify him as their assailant. In the original series, Adam and Alexis were always allies against Blake so I don’t think forgiveness for barbecuing her face is going to be forthcoming. Perhaps the only ally Adam will have moving forward is Jeff Colby.
