Archie Andrews and friends celebrate 75 years in the comics in 2016, and they have another major event this year to celebrate. After a pilot featuring the eternal teenagers was pitched to Fox and rejected, producer Greg Berlanti brought the project to his friends at The CW. The network has officially picked up the pilot for a live-action series to be titled Riverdale to be shot this spring.
The new drama will offer a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness brewing beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The Archie/Betty/Veronica love triangle will be a focal point of the show, and recent addition to town Kevin Keller will also play a pivotal role in the story.
As with The CW shows set in the DC Comics universe, Riverdale will be able to introduce other characters from the Archie Comics library including Josie and the Pussycats.
If the pilot is successful, it could air as early as the fall of 2016, but with a roster of successful shows already on the network, space is at a premium. It may come down to how The Vampire Diaries and The Originals perform in theie new Friday time slots, or if Reign will be dethroned when it returns from its hiatus. Don’t bet on seeing Riverdale until at least the spring of 2017.
