Preacher brings the comic closer to heart this week

Episode 4, “Monster Swamp”

Forget everything about the episode. Forget everything about it: Tulip and Cassidy, the angels, everything. Because the down and dirty is this: There’s nothing to think about but Quincannon and Custer and their little “agreement.”

Ballsy move on Custer’s part, putting that proposition to Quincannon. Was it the right thing to do? Or, rather, was it the right thing to do with his Power? Wasn’t that pushing the limits ethically, forcing someone into The Almighty’s Service against their will? (But … was it really against Quincannon’s will? Is his will, under the influence, his at all?) I don’t know about you but it seems like a slippery slope to me, with all the double thinking you could force onto yourself in so doing.

Still, the only thing I couldn’t help but ponder was how Custer’s actions were going to backfire on him. And when. Because, truly, that’s the bottom line.

And we didn’t have to wait very long, did we?

Episode 5, “South Will Rise Again”

Custer is basking in the newfound glory of his recent “conversion” of Odin Quincannon and the “celebrity” it’s brought him.

Donnie is wise to Custer’s ways, putting two and two together in believing he’s of the understanding what Custer has foisted on Quincannon. After all, he’s been one of the lucky recipients of the preacher’s “suggestions” …

Tulip is on a mission to get Custer back.

Fiore and DeBlanc finally meet up with Custer.

And Eugene is shouldering some mighty heavy burdens all around between his father, Terri Loach and most of town of Annville.

But it’s the repurcussions of Quincannon’s church service visit and his interaction with Custer I was most interested in. And, in the end, the culmination of that exchange exploded. Literally.

I wasn’t expecting that. By all indications, it looked as if Quincannon had turned over a new leaf and was working merrily along within the auspices of The Word Custer gave to him. And then? << BOOM >> Within seconds we went from hand pumping happiness to four dead people and a shocked mayor who was witness to it all. Quincannon even went so far as to charmingly refer to Chloe of the Green Acres group as “young lady.”

What does this all mean? Well, with regard to Custer and Quincannon, it means we got some pretty interesting glimpse into the future.

Our good preacher discovered it’s not God inside him powering his incredible ability but something else entirely. (Yep. That was a shocker for Jesse. You could see the puzzled look on his face when Fiore and DeBlanc sprung that reveal on him.)

And we really got a slap in the face courtesy of the trigger-fingered (pun intended) and Quincannon. There’s the twisted mind knocking about inside that bald pate we all know and love from the comics! It’s nutcase time, folks!

Bonus: We really were sent into comic overdrive in getting The Saint Of Killers origin this episode, too. (I quibbled about it in a manner of speaking when I discussed the second episode a few weeks back.)

Overall? A nifty, fulfilling fifth installment of the series. Things appear to be getting more interesting.

And a final thought: I’m trying to figure out why Fiore and DeBlanc have that “Hotline to Heaven” in the first place. Makes sense that if they don’t have it they can’t be contacted … right? A “no news is good news” sort of thinking.
