The Amazing Race takes a midnight train to Georgia

The remaining seven teams on The Amazing Race traveled by train from Armenia to Georgia (and, yes, Phil Keoghan said it was a midnight train) which allowed Sheri & Cole, who thought for sure they were eliminated at the last Pit Stop, to get themselves back on equal footing with everyone else. It also gave Tyler & Korey the same advantage after falling from the head of the pack to the rear. The long train trip also allowed Brodie and Blair to spend some quality time together. It’s nice to see that all of the teams are actually getting along, and so far there seems to be no hostile rivalries between any of them.

When the train arrived in Tbilisi, Georgia, Kurt & Brodie were first to debark the train, with Tyler & Korey back in second place but everyone was so bunched up at that point it really didn’t matter who was in what position until they got instructions from the first clue which was awaiting them at the statue of St. George, for whom the country is named. From there, teams had to head to the Narikala Fortress which sat atop a very steep hill. Some teams had cab drivers able to get their cabs to the top, but Matt & Dana’s cabbie dropped them off at the very bottom of the hill, forcing them to walk all the way up, and Scott & Blair were dumped about halfway up when their cab couldn’t handle the steep incline.

At the fortress, the clue directed everyone to the Jvari Monastrey where they would find their next clue which was a Detour. This leg’s tasks were a choice between making a local candy, churchkhela, or cleaning out a large clay pot used for wine making. This was one of those Detours where one thing sounded easier than the other, but the opposite was true. Cleaning the pot, which was buried in the ground and required one team member to climb in to clean, was actually the easier of the two tasks. But only Sheri & Cole chose that while the other six did the candy task.

The catch to the candy Detour was that there were only four station available, so any teams bringing up the rear had to wait until one station became free. Tyler & Korey, Kurt & Brodie, Zach & Rachel and Burnie & Ashley were first at the candy. The deceptively difficult task was taking much longer than anyone expected, and it was physically more painful as well as it required teams to string twenty hazelnuts with a long, very sharp needle and then dip the string into a thick coating of tatara, a mixture of flour, sugar and wine, and then hung to dry. If the tatara wasn’t the perfect sausage-like shape, the teams would have to remake the rejected pieces.

And that’s exactly what Kurt & Brodie and Tyler & Korey had to do. Tyler & Korey had to remake four of their five pieces and by that time their fingers were so sore they decided to switch Detours. When Matt & Dana arrived and saw the four stations already occupied, they didn’t wait around but their cab driver seemed to have no idea where the winery was so they made him return to the candy Detour … where they ran into Tyler & Korey searching for a cab. When told how difficult the task was, they all banded together, got new cabs and went to the winery which thrilled Cole because it meant he and Sheri were not in last place.

The Detour results found Zach & Rachel finishing first, Burnie & Ashley second, Kurt & Brodie third, Sheri & Cole fourth, Scott & Blair fifth, Matt & Dana sixth, and Tyler & Korey once again dead last.

After the Detour, teams encountered a Roadblock at the Rustaveli National Theater. One team member would have to master some pretty complicated choreography and dance with the national ballet troupe in order to get their next clue. Zach had done a little dancing in the past so he took the challenge. Ashley and Kurt were close behind, but Ashley had more dance training than the boys and was able to ace the steps on the first try putting them in first place on the way to the Pit Stop at the Bridge of Peace.

Zach & Rachel were not far behind, however, and managed to beat Burnie & Ashley to the Pit Stop due to their cab driver dropping them off at the wrong park. Back at the theater, Kurt was able to get his choreography down after a couple of tries and the perpetual first placers ended this leg in third place. That left Korey, Sheri, Dana and … Scott to battle it out at the theater. Why on earth Blair made her father do the Roadblock is baffling, but turns out it ended up becoming a battle for last place between them and Tyler & Korey.

At the Pit Stop, the first four teams were actually bunched up much closer than it seemed when they were dancing with Dana & Matt joining the first three teams on the mat at the same time. Sheri & Cole arrived a little later in fifth place. At the theater, pressure was mounting on the last two teams and Scott actually completed the dance before Korey on his sixth try. Blair was so confident that he was going to get it that she had already picked up their bags and was ready to run, and then Scott picked up what he thought was his bag and they took off to find a cab.

Korey finally got his dance done right after Scott, on what seemed to be his eighth try, and Korey was panicked because he bag was missing. No one realized Scott took the bag by accident and while they were running around the theater trying to find who took it, Scott ran back in and handed it off to Tyler, which them put the two teams neck and neck for the finish.

This was one of the most tense, heart-pounding races to the Pit Stop we’ve ever seen as the two teams knew one of them was going to be eliminated. Scott & Blair were just ahead of Tyler & Korey, but their cab was finally able to squeeze past but they were still close. At the park, both cabs arrived almost simultaneously, but it all came down to a foot race which gave Tyler & Korey the advantage, placing them in sixth and eliminating Scott & Blair. Unfortunately, it’s the end of #Blodie on the race, but the two have made plans to get together afterwards.

Next week, teams head to Dubai and have to race on bicycles against camels!
