The Amazing Race is making the most out of its first trip to Columbia by remaining in Cartagena for the third leg. Teams had to race to various locations around the city to find their clues which ended up being, first, a Detour and then a Roadblock.
The Detour had two choices: “Tickets,” which required teams to board a local bus and collect 20,000 pesos from the riders, or “Tejo,” which was a game like Cornhole, except it was played with 3 lb metal “puck” about twenty meters at a small target … that explodes when hit! I don’t know about you, but tossing something at an exploding target sounds a lot easier (and more fun) than begging people who don’t need to ride the bus to get on your bus and then force them to pay for the ride they didn’t want. Seven of the ten teams agreed, and not surprisingly, they all finished ahead of the three teams who went for bus rides.
On the buses, Zach was recognized from his magical Vine videos so he was able to get some folks on his bus with ease. Unfortunately, his partner Rachel was confused by the Columbian money, thought she had two 10,000 peso notes and got the bus to go back to the starting point … only to find they were about 5,000 pesos short and had to go back around.
Erin & Joslyn were having a great time on their bus, telling passengers they cleaned all the seats, and deciding they could make it a career. On Scott & Blair’s bus, Blair was promising “besos for pesos” but she only blew kisses to the passengers, much to her father’s relief. Erin & Joslyn finished the Detour in eighth place, Scott & Blair were ninth and Zach & Rachel brought up the rear due to their mathematical error, which gave the team that started in last place, Darius & Cameron, a nice leg up on the competition.
At the Roadblock, one team member had to select a locally made handbag, then race to specially marked sales area to find another back made by the same designer by looking at the pattern. Production helped them a bit by actually putting tags inside the bags with the designer’s name so there was no racing back and forth to the check point, which would have made the task even more challenging for some.
Most everyone made it through the challenge with relative ease, although several of the team members got way off track from the designated area. Erin and Scott got lost, tried to work together, then Erin just took off as Scott fumbled around, but he caught up to her and they continued until she had her three bags.
Now, when each person had their bags, they had to go back to where they started where their other teammate was standing and then give the bags to a woman who was sitting right there with a row of clue envelopes lined up against the wall next to her. Seemed like a pretty simple thing to do for everyone … except Darius. Poor Darius. He thought he had to find the designer and give the bags to her so he wandered all over the city looking for the woman, even walking past Cameron and the other racers who couldn’t say a word to him because the rules forbid any help during a Roadblack. Cameron just had to sit there and watch Darius walk past the check-in point for a painfully long time.
But their luck may not have run out as Zach finished the Roadblock ahead of Darius and told Rachel he knew exactly where the Pit Stop was — just follow the sound of all the drummimg! Except that’s not where Phil and Miss Cartagena were waiting. Just another instance of Zach not reading his clue. We’ll see how far that tactic takes them in the race. But it gave a little hope for Darius & Cameron to get to the Pit Stop.
At the Pit Stop, Phil and Miss Cartagena greeted:
- Brodie & Kurt, who won a trip to Mykonos
- Tyler & Korey
- Burnie & Ashley
- Dana & Matt
- Brittany & Jessica
- Sheri & Cole
- Erin & Joslyn
- Scott & Blair
As Zach & Rachel reached the Matt, Phil gave them a look and told them that … the last place team was right behind them, giving them mild heart attacks thinking they had completely screwed up. But it was Darius & Cameron who were eliminated this week after climbing out of last place at the Detour.
